> That assumes she realizes she screwed up and it’s not just “a matter of taste”. How long are you supposed to keep gnoshing away while you wait for someone to realize the chicken is raw at the center?

Raw chicken is a health issue, not a taste issue, and definitely not what I’d consider edible. If you’re eating raw chicken at my place, please let me know ASAP!

> Now, this strikes me as utterly bizarre. They have been together for 4 years, she feeds him every day. She made delicious beans the night before. Why on earth would he hesitate to say:" Whoops, babe! Thanks for trying but it looks like you messed up the salt." End of story. For a million reasons, but not least being the fact that the salt issue was not a matter of taste; no one would have eaten the beans with that much salt. AND undercooked, actually, I almost forgot.

Maybe the guy likes salt.

For example:

My dad: “Ugh, this food is too salty”
Me : Grabs salt shaker to add some more 😛

I actually add salt on every food before I even taste it because 99,9% it needs more salt to suit my taste. According to Terry Pratchett I am an autocondimenter.

Adding too many peppers- making things too spicy hot. There are some things you can’t make un-hot. It is important to note though, what is too hot for one, might be acceptable to someone else in the family.

When my husband were still commuting before we were married (he’d drive from Melbourne 600kms to see me on a weekend), I literally did not know that he didn’t eat vegetables. I didn’t know that because he ate everything I cooked for him. One weekend before he left on a Sunday to drive back to Melbourne, I cooked him a lamb roast complete with tomato and onion pie, cauliflower and broccoli au gratin, peas, beans, corn, pumpkin and gravy. He ate everything up, praising me as he did so.

Then after lunch, in bed and snoozy in the afterglow (well, hey - I wasn’t going to see him for at least another week), he pulled the sheet up to under his eyes and rolled towards me. “Babe, I’ve something to tell you”. Straight away I thought, okay, this is it, he wants to call it quits. He snuggled his head down completely covered by the sheet and whispered “I really HATE corn”.

Needless to say - he now eats the bloody stuff.

> Probably because she cooked it by feel and experience. Not, “Three cups of flour” but “Start with some flour, and if it’s not enough add more until it’s right.”

That was it. Mom was trying to get measurements and Grandma did it by pinches and dashes. FTR, Mom now makes bread just as irresistable as Grandma’s was.

Great grandma died during childbirth with my great aunt, and Grandma ended up being raised by an Evil Stepmother who worked her like a galley slave and never taught her anything. On the plus side she learned to be happy and satisfied with a life of hard work and little money. She chose her own path, married a good man, had lots of kids and friends, retired comfortably, enjoyed a long healthy life, and died in her sleep surrounded by three generations of family. I learned a lot from her.

That’s was the challenge with the accidentally super-spiced soup. Rinsing off the more soild ingredients and making a new broth has helped, but some of the more absorbent items were still pretty zippy. It was edible though.

I still can’t imagine not piping up if there was an ingredient accident. Like my grandma used to make this… kind of bread pudding… sort of… thing. It was awesome, but don’t ask me to recreate it. Cinnamon was a key ingredient. One day, I guess she was distracted and used nutmeg instead. Yowsa! Grandma never ate desserts. So I’d love to see how nibbling away while waiting for the cook to discover the error would have worked out.

I trust my family and friends and know they aren’t being assholes for the sake of being assholes, so if someone said “Um, dude. I think you may have made a mistake with your baked cellphone recipe.” I wouldn’t be annoyed or offended. Shit happens. My girlfriend could have soldiered on with my crazy hot soup, but really there was no reason to. We just worked together to make it right.
