BTW, this song was originally done by King Missile.
Beat me to it. But wow! other Uncle Bonsai fans.
BTW I was coming in here to mention Laurie Anderson. But of course, I’m too late for that as well as Glass’s “Einstein on the Beach”.
I never really like the word “wierd” with music, but a particular interesting guy is (IIR [the name] C) Charles Amirkanian. He creates 3-D soundscapes, very clever and very interesting, where you actually feel yourself moving through this imaginary space.
Has Steve Reich been mentioned? Again, I don’t want to say wierd, but he has created some very interesting sounds in minimal music. I personally like him better than Philip Glass, though I think Koyanisqaatsi (sp?) is one of the most amazing pieces of art ever created.
Trilok Gurtu, virtuosso percussionist, often fuses classical indian music with jazz, amazing stuff! and on a related note (ba dump <<crash>>), I think Oregon might be avant-garde enough to be considered wierd by some.
I mentioned Zappa, but I’m surprised I forgot to mention Krystov Penderecki, one of Zappa’s influences. Far out classical stuff, very abstract and dissonant (some of it that is).
If a Mod happens to see this, could you please take out the bolding of my last post and delete this one?
Thanks
It gets better. Your profile says you’re in Brooklyn, and Uncle Bonsai is doing two shows in New York on November 26th. I’ll be there, and I’m thinking of starting a thread to see if I can convince some more Dopers to join in.
I haven’t seen Reich in the thread yet, but I heard some of his stuff back in college. I had a roommate who listened to a lot of 20th Century, avant-garde classical. The thing I eventually realized about pieces like Come Out is that to me it’s almost more interesting to hear a description of the techniques than to hear the actual piece. I think it’s fascinating that someone like Harry Partch can take his originality down to absolute first principles of music, like devising his own 43-note scale. But it’s so far removed from everything else that I just don’t have any aesthetic grip on it.
I just saw a review of a Kronos Quartet show. They seem to be one of the few groups that specialize in recent classical music. At this show they came out for an encore and did Miserlou by Dick Dale (the King of the Surf Guitar). Man, I hope somebody got a recording of that.
WHAT? Uncle Bonsai in NY? WHOOPPPEEEEEE!!! I’m so there! Start that thread!
