Because killing (bad as it is) is actually a way to achieve some _other_, often utilitarian goals - that’s why bad people hire hit men. “I’d kill for this inheritance”. Rape and molestation, aside from unusual circumstances, are generally ends in themselves. Therefore it makes more sense to say “I’d kill for a \_\_\_\_\_”. It’s deliberate exaggeration, but it makes sense. Saying “I’d rape for \_\_\_\_\_” doesn’t, because rape isn’t usually a way to _get_ things. Edit. D’oh. Ninja’d. ---

I suppose that I wasn’t thinking of “I’ll kill you and take this from you” but more like “I’d be a killer for hire for a \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_.” If **Malthus’** hit man analogy is correct, the phrase “I’d kidnap for a \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_.” would be useful as well. ---

Yes, but killing is way more extreme than kidnapping. The point is not just “I’d do something illegal for this,” but “I’d do what is arguably the worst possible thing for this.” ---
