On tonights episode, Grace had a cut on her head. Harry Connick, playing a doctor she meets, asks her to let him look at her “gash.” She was offended until she realized he was talking about he cut. WOW! I think this has replaced the “ass forking” line from the Simpsons as the smuttiest line I have heard on network TV. That and the “B-U-T” vs “B-U-T-T-” analyis made for a shocking episode. ---

I think it’s just stupid that she would be offended and assume that “gash” referred to anything other than the cut on her head. Talk about writing that goes for shock instead of wit. And the word “tits” was used in an _L.A. Law_ episode way back when, with no double meaning intended. When Susan Dey said “tits”, she _meant_ tits. ---

Rude on TV? Jonathan Ross on _They Think It’s All Over_ (humorous UK sports quiz programme - rounds include “Feel The Sportsman”, where two blindfolded celebs have to identify sportspersons by touch alone). He’s very rude. Easily ruder than Graham Norton, and gives Julian Clary at his rudest a run for his money - while being relatively subtle and oblique . It’s innuendo, but it’s fucking obscene innuendo, none of your twee, simpering nudge-nudge, wink-wink bollocks. Simply fabulous, in my opinion. ---

Of course, Julian Clary is responsible for the most amusing/offensive line ever heard on British telly. He comes on to present an award at some showbiz bash, and his opening remark was “Hello everyone, I’ve just been back-stage fisting Norman Lamont!”. Brought the house down of course, especially given that Lamont was the deeply unpopular Chancellor of the Exchequer at the time, and had been on the show minutes before presenting another award. ---

I’ve always felt that Groundskeeper Willy’s line “…or I’ll rip you a new arse!” was surprisingly (and hilariously) rude. I don’t think many British family shows would include that. IMO for some reason it’s much stronger to British ears than it would be with “ass” substituted; I don’t think the scriptwriters realised that. As a hijack, someone who is an “arsehole” is not necessarily an “asshole”; they have subtly different connotations. ---

If you are talking Network TV Canada has beaten that years ago. CTV aired the Sopranoes and now is Airing the Osbournes sans the bleeps. City TV in Toronto has been airng movies virtually uncut for language etc. When they started 25 plus years ago they used to play Blue movies (softcore porn) Friday nights… thay are doing it again. I’m not shocked by anything I’m numb… well until Kiddie shows start using the same langauge. ---

I don’t recall Grace Van Owen saying “tits.” I recall Kuzack (sp?) with a case in which he referred to a “nicked boob” and I thought that sounded stupidly artificial. The GVO lines I recall fondly are when she says that the bull semen case was “seminal” and when she said that if she did something with Kuzack she could be described with a two-word phrase the second of which rhymes with “freezer.” ---
