What’s more likely - though farfetched - is that American Muslims will join an alliance with Xtian fundamentalists. They see eye to eye on a lot of stuff. I’ve worked at places here in LA where there were fundamentalist Baptists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Muslims. They were all in agreement that it was immoral and disgusting for Newsweek to have gay men kissing on its cover. ---

Something of the sort was definitely part of mainstream Republican political strategy prior to 2002. Socially conservative Muslim immigrants, like socially conservative Hispanic immigrants, were seen as likely and desirable additions to non-extremist Republican constituencies (the ones that don’t automatically get all bent out of shape at having to associate with non-Christians or non-whites). Republican strategists threw that alliance under the bus not long after 9/11, though. The Islamophobic bandwagon was just too big and had too much momentum to pass up (as we can see from the fact that it’s still going strong, as per this thread’s OP, more than ten years later). ---
