It’s less about ophthalmology and more about your brain. You brain normally designates cells for your left, right, and binocular channels. If it doesn’t get input from one, it assumes it doesn’t exist, and redesignates the input elsewhere. End result: no input in that critical period can mean a paucity of binocular cells, or worse, in one eye. This could lead to the eye not working, or more commonly, the dominant eye taking over.
