Reduce substitution so that more all-around athletes will play rather than the genetic/steroid freaks we see now.
Simplify the mind boggling array of penalties: why shouldn’t offensive linemen be prohibited from holding, or receivers be harassed as they move down field, or the number of receivers limited?
Make cleats shorter so that there aren’t so many knee injuries.
Look at how much safety equipment like helmets and body armor contributes to injuries.
There was a 60 Minutes episode in recent months that covered much of that. Not much you can get into in 15 minutes of air time, but it’s been covered by a popular television news program. One whose journalistic standards I’ve come to question since their recent report on coal ash, but a well-respected program nonetheless.
Yet, even if it comes on right after football this time of year, I don’t think many football players watch it.
Leading with the head when tackling is indeed illegal, although it still happens without penalty quite often (witness this hit from last year’s playoffs). Further, while leading with the helmet while tackling is illegal, there is no such prohibition on head-to-head contact while blocking. If you watch the line play in any football game you will see plenty of helmet-on-helmet contact on any run play.
Oh, if someone dies from a straight up hit, 100% it’s a Wide Receiver (more likely, though, it’ll be some freak play like Kevin Everett). Hell, from what they’ve said, Kevin Everett damn near WAS the casualty we’re talking about.
Not quite - leading with the head is only illegal if the player being tackled is in a defenseless position - you can’t hit a QB in the act of passing or a receiver who’s actively attempting to catch the ball. Once the receiver has possession or the QB breaks the pocket, they’re runners and you can hit 'em with your helmet if you want to.
There was no flag thrown on the play in your example because it wasn’t an illegal hit. McGahee had made the catch and wasn’t defenseless. Simms and Gumble (I think they were the announcers) even talk about the rule in that clip - you’re fair game if you’re a runner.
I agree that leading with the head is both often legal and very stupid. I really thought that Kevin Everett might be dead on the field back in the Bills opener in 2007. That was quite possibly the scariest thing I have ever seen watching football. The fact that the man can walk again is a freaking miracle.
Why not go really throwback and bring back the leather helmets? At least that will hopefully stop people from using the head as a weapon.
Like baseball…make em play both offense and defense. Reduce the players on the team roster to half. They’ll be too tired to hit so hard and the small, wiry endurance guys will have a chance
