To be clear, when I said “not a ship was lost” I was referring to surface cargo ships. A few blimps were lost over the course of the war to accidents and weather. One, the K-74 was shot down while it was engaging a surfaced German U-boat (the blimps were armed with machine guns and depth charges).
The one you’re thinking about was the L-8. The blimp was on patrol near the San Francisco bay area. Contact was lost and it was spotted a few times appearantly drifting un-controlled. It finally touched down and was found to be without it two man crew and the door open. It’s a mystery exactly what happened, but it’s speculated that while it was investigating an oil slick one man fell out and the other man fell as well while trying to save the first.
The L-8 gondola was used as a trainer for the rest of the war then retired. Goodyear re-used it in the sixties on one of their blimps and finally replaced it with a new gondola in the eighties.
