Did the Illinois Legislature pass some sort of Anti-Employment-of-Pantology law that I just haven’t been made aware of? Do I smell funny? Are my short hair, clean-shaven-ness, and lack of body piercings somehow perceived as threatening? Do four years of networking (NT, NetWare, Cisco, LAN/WAN, etc…) experience, references that many would kill for, and numerous letters after your name (CNE, CCNA, and more on the way) just not mean anything these days? Christ in a tube-top, it’s not like I’m looking for work in Asspump, Idaho; I’m in a reasonably high-tech area (the lovely Champaign-Urbana, IL, specifically the University Of) and it’s not like I’m asking for six figures; I just need a 25-35ish-hour a week job doing just about anything computer/network-related that will pay somewhere around eight measily fuckin’ buck an hour. Is that too much to ask? ---

Ask for $20-$30/hour and you might get a few nibbles. ---

Question: Does UofI-Champaign-Urbana just spew out comp-sci majors who are willing to work for beer money while their in school? Just a guess; maybe that’s why you’re having trouble. I know that here at a certain company that shall be named that we have trouble keeping network folks for what we’re paying, and it sure ain’t eight bucks an hour. ---

The OP was just a post in desperation, made right after I got the most recent “We’re not looking for anyone with your background at this time” e-mail. “Are my short hair, clean-shaven-ness…” Just a thought, but you probably shouldn’t be talking about your short-hairs to potential employers. It’s not appropriate. The fact that you shave down there, is not necessarily a bad thing. However, the fact that you’re striving for the prepubescent look may cause some disomfort. My advice is to keep this information to yourself. I think you’ll find a amuch better responce from your interviews. Heh, heh, heh. ---
