Erm, I know others have pointed this out already, but I’d just like to say that I would be a much, much more financially stable 'dilla if five minutes of work bought me a gallon of gas. I think it’s closer to 15 minutes.
That was in response to Thaumaturge. His comment about the economy is unrelated to the relative cost of gasoline and I was prompting him to explain what he meant in an attempt to figure out where he was going with that. Of course, it looks like I hit “submit” before I finished the rest of my post and going back, the comment appears to be a non-sequetir and irrelevant. I forgot what I was going to follow that up with, so I think I’ll drop it.
I agree with your idea that we’ve got more competition, but I earlier stated that I had read (on www.dailyreckoning.com, although the article itself is long gone and I don’t recall where they got their statistic from) that it’s really more of a refining capability problem. Again, I have no cite for that, but if LVgeogeek’s statement is correct, my theory holds up.
Perhaps there should be a discussion of wellhead oil prices, the cost of gasoline at the pump, and apply the two against the Big Mac Index for true cost comparisons, among countries, as well as historical.
After all, if The Economist gives it credibility, why not use the price of oil and gas as well?
Inflation adjusted the price of gas was $2.75 in the early 80’s.

That’s because you can’t apply population statistics to individuals. Don’t mean squat. Ms Hook and myself require some 2 minutes to buy a gallon. Bill Gates can get himself a gallon for the lawnmower every .24 seconds.
Don’t worry laddies, as you age your gallons-per-minute cost should drop nicely. 'Course then your older which sort of sucks.
Tell you what, I’ll trade you incomes if you’ll trade ages.
