The level of corruption involved really is mind-blowing. Rio has reportedly displaced about 22,000 families to make room for the Olympics. These families have mostly been dumped into out-of-the-way housing projects, and many have not been compensated.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics is basically being planned by the Yakuza. It’s well known that the bidding process for games comes down to who can pay the best bribes. Japan won the 2020 games over Turkey because they could pay more.
And there’s lots of collusion in determining the winners of events. You might remember the French/Russian shennanigans during the Salt Lake City Olympics. In the London Olympics, Azerbaijan bribed the boxing judges to win a medal, and there are allegations that the US & Russia colluded on skating during the Sochi Olympics.
As an afterthought: In the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, the men’s hockey finals ended up being the US vs Canada. Before the game even began, I was pretty sure it would end with Canada winning. And it had nothing to do with who was the better team.

I know they are corrupt and I hope they get the same treatment that the FIFA officials did. Still a little overboard to say they’d kill every athlete in the village. But whatever, I’m not going to defend them.
