The UConn women’s hoops team won their 89th straight, breating the D-I win streak record. Do you think they’ll get to 100 in a row? How long can they keep it up? ---

I think they can get to 100. I strongly suspect that the most likely game for them to lose will be at the end (semifinals or finals) of the NCAA basketball tournament. ---

Here is their schedule for the rest of the regular season. I see Duke is ranked third right now. Stanford is eight and UNC is 10. There are some other ranked teams in there, but Florida State was #20 and they killed them (like they kill most teams). The 100th game would be Duke. The consensus seems to be that Stanford will be the toughest game. Their coach has predicted they will lose some games this year. (Gampel Pavilion) 7:30 p.m. I have to roll my eyes a little at the idea that UConn just broke the ‘Division I’ record. They set the women’s record in March. UCLA has the men’s record. The game are different, nevermind that UCLA’s record was set in 1974. There’s not much point in comparing the two (and I say that while acknowledging some of the comparisons are favorable to UConn) and it’s a rather transparent ploy to draw more interest in women’s basketball. Auriemma’s complaints about sexism strike me the same way. ---

UConn’s streak isn’t even the longest winning streak in women’s college sports **this year**. Penn State recently ended a 107-game winning streak in women’s volleyball (although they did win the national title again just a week ago…WE ARE!) ---

Just as a point of argument, they did not break the D-I record. They long ago set the women’s D-I record and have exceeded in length the record for men’s D-I basketball. Don’t mix apples and potatoes, they are not the same. The only thing they have in common is basketball. Can they get to 100? Sure. They could also lose tomorrow. Who’s to say? ---

Great game. Doubly so, as I tend to follow Stanford. Years ago during the Kate Starbird era at Stanford I by happenstance somehow got drawn into women’s NCAA basketball. I seem to be one of the few red-blooded, meat-eating males that will admit to being a fan :p. It may have been that because the play is a little slower I can better discern and appreciate the development of set plays. ---

I truly don’t understand the hooplah over this. They played the whole thing up with them “breaKing the mens record”. No. They didn’t. They broke the womens record. Only men can break the mens record. Now if they won 89 games in a row against mens teams then there’d would be a point to this but womens basketball is not the same as mens. Sorry. ---

But like I said it is an impressive accomplishment for a college team of any sex to rack up two plus undefeated seasons. Now you could say you just don’t give a crap about women’s college basketball and therefore the hooplah is kinda meaningless to you ( which is perfectly fine - I don’t follow the Cubs or water polo or many other sports/teams 🙂 ). But surely you can understand the hooplah in general? ---

But surely you can understand the hooplah in general? Peace. The streak itself is very impressive no matter what sport or gender. I’m not taking away from that and they should be proud of the accomplishment. There’s no reason to bring the mens record into the conversation though.
