I play D&D but I think it sucks. There are 100’s of better TTRPGs that few play. The D&D movie looks like a good fantasy movie. Linking it to D&D makes me less likely to want to see it. But, if the reviews are good maybe. ---

Yes, probably. I’m an old-time D&D’er (before First Edition, because you don’t name the only edition “First”). My adult and near-adult sons are also very much into the game in its more recent incarnations, including the other media like novels and video games. We are definitely the target audience. ---

There was all the negative hype after Nintendo announced Chris Pratt, but the blitz of marketing seemed to turn that around—especially after Pratt’s voice seemed to get better. I’d heard a lot less about the D&D film. I learned about it here, and have only otherwise seen it mentioned when people were talking about the timing between it and Mario. ---

I had planned on it, I’ve played D&D since I was 12 years old. However, the casting hits a lot of “no thanks” buttons to me. Doesn’t mean I won’t try it when it streams, but no theater for me. ---

I have been playing RPGs since '80, I’m 51 this year, and have averaged a weekly game in that time. I don’t prefer 5E but have run and play it, but use Level Up, or Advanced 5E as we call it. I saw the movie on Sunday. It was fun. I have several nits I have picked but it was still a fun movie. Other reviewers have said it better than me. “This is a DND movie DND players will be happy to claim.” “This is a DND movie that we gamers can point to and say, yeah, that’s how it plays.” ---

I saw it last night with my whole family–astonishingly, my wife, who’s definitely not a gamer, took one look at the trailer and said, “Let’s go see that for my birthday!” It was a ton of fun. Definitely not as good as _Princess Bride_–what is?–but it’s much more in that vein than in the portentous _Lord of the Rings_ or _Game of Thrones_ mold. It’s a heist comedy with lots of Dungeons and Dragons silliness thrown in. I was expecting the easter eggs for nerds. I was expecting the Marvel-like witticisms. What I wasn’t expecting was the cleverness of the plot. There were at least two plot twists that tied together multiple elements of the movie, dating back to the earliest moments: The balloon treasure vomit was hysterically funny, pulling in the balloon from the first twenty minutes of the movie, the promise to the paladin, the hither-thither staff, Forge’s promise of a “delightful treasure” to the crowd, and the need to evacuate the arena. The final defeat of the Red Wizard tied in the invisibility amulet and the anti-magic bracelets, as well as of course all the great character buildup of both heroes and villain. I will happily watch sequels, if they have the same writers and directors. ---

Is there a clip of the displacer beast, or a time stamp on the trailer? I saw the beast in the trailer but not the effect you describe. ---

Went to see it this evening. I really liked it. I’m a casual D&D player so I’m sure I missed some of the Easter eggs. I enjoyed the characters tossing out increasingly ridiculous ideas: reminded me of our games. I loved the bit where they were questioning the corpses - especially the first one.
