# Winamp

A while ago, when I downloaded Netscape Navigator 7.0 It came with Winamp, which has icons in the Quicklaunch and Shortcut menus on the Windows 98 Task Bar. So far, I haven’t been able to find a way to remove them. There’s no option in Winamp itself, and I looked through some of the Windows .ini files and haven’t found it in there either. And it’s not in the Startup folder either.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Well, for getting rid of icons in the Quick Launch tool bar, I just right-click and pick Delete. Does that not work for you?

For the quicklaunch, you remove it by right clicking on the icon and selecting delete, eh? Or are you referring to another part of the OS?
When in doubt, right click on it.
I think the heart of your problem is that you downloaded Netscape Navigator 7. What/who made you do THAT?

Also, since I have been the lone strident voice on this matter, I would like to point out that there is no such thing as Netscape Navigator 7.0. The name of the product that I think you downloaded is simply Netscape 7.0. Navigator is a browser that never made it past version 4.x.

Getting a bit off-topic, but consider using Mozilla instead of Netscape 7. It’s a lot cleaner.

And yes, use Mozilla. All N/NN 7.0 is is Mozilla with a bunch of crap duct taped to it.

Sorry, I realize it’s confusing, but that is not the name of the program. Navigator is a function of Netscape 7.0 that browses the internet. If Navigator 7.0 is a program, then Start Menu 98 is an operating system.
Of course, I am not an official Netscape representative, so I’m willing to stand corrected if you can find a cite to the contrary.
I don’t think we should discuss how good or bad Netscape is outside of IMHO.

No, Navigator 7.0 is the product that replaced Netscape Communicator 4.x. Both contain programs sub-programs called Netscape Navigator (the browser) and Netscape Mail and Netscape Composer. Netscape Navigator is to Netscape 7.0 as Microsoft Word 2002 is to Microsoft OfficeXP.
Anyway, all technicalities for a crappy product. :-p

Can you find a single instance of “Navigator 7.0” on Netscape’s website? [A Google search](http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&as_qdr=all&q=%22navigator+7.0%22+site%3Anetscape.com&btnG=Google+Search) returned 12 hits, and as far as I can tell, all of the cached results have this at the top:

Anyway, it is a moot point and off topic.
I will reiterate to the OP, I’d advise looking into either Mozilla itself or Opera. AOL does all kinds of hideous things to Mozilla to make it Netscape.

Fair enough, but it is also an individual product. 🙂
[MS.com](http://MS.com) also hits “Office” 256,000 times. “Netscape” 6,460 times, “Netscape Navigator” 2,930 times, “Tennis” 189 times, “Microsoft” 398,000 times, and “Internet Explorer” 148,000 times, the word “and” 424,000 times.
Netscape.come hits “Netscape” 159,000 times, “Navigator” 7,940 times, “Tennis” 405 times, “Microsoft” 7,102 times, etc etc, and the word “and” 89,800 times.

**Joel** , it sounds like there may be some confusion in terms. The Quick Launch bar is the one next to the Start menu. Items can be deleted from it by right-clicking and hitting **Delete**. The area next to the clock (usually in the lower-right corner of the screen) is called the System Tray. Removing icons from it can be trickier. Is this what you’re asking about?
If so, go to **Start|Run** , type **msconfig** , hit **OK** , and go to the **Startup** tab. This will show you all programs that run when Windows starts up. Uncheck the box for Winamp, hit **Apply** and reboot. This should get rid of it.

Number, thanks. I did call the system tray the shortcut menu. Running **msconfig** is exactly the answer I was looking for.
And for everybody else, yeah, I know that it’s technically not Netscape Navigator 7.0, just Netscape 7.0, it’s just that I pretty much only use Navigator, so that’s all I really think about when using Netscape.
Also, when running **msconfig** it showed that I have a Mozilla Quick Launch and that the command line is C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscp.exe -turbo
So, it appears that Mozilla is a part of Netscape 7.0 At least on my system anyway.

There IS an option in WinAmp to disable WinAmp Agent, I believe it is called. Why companies insist on running all kinds of crap like that, I’m not terribly sure, since none of it is useful, and you already installed the friggin’ thing, so you’ll use it. They mostly just get in the way, cause clutter, waste resources, and cause crashes.
Like I said, Netscape 7.0 is pretty much just Mozilla with some extra crap AOL duct taped to it, and duct taped poorly. There are many spots (like the Quick Launch) that Netscape didn’t even bother to change the name of. Which isn’t surprising, since Netscape 6 was just a beta version of Mozilla, and was pretty much universally hated. After all, why download a program without the popup control, that is less stable than an updated Mozilla, and that installs a lot of crappy programs and addons when you can download the core engine of that program without all that crap?
