Microsoft skipped 9 because 10 is 1 better.
(More or less) seriously, I’ve heard two theories. The first is that Microsoft want to put the kibosh on the idea that Windows 10 is an “updated” Windows 8; the other is to prevent confusion with Windows 9x (95, 98, &c).
From answers.microsoft.com:
With a computer that old, why would you want to burden it with running Win10?
Just leave it on Windows 7. (If it’s not broke, don’t try to fix it!)
Here is how to check if your system is compatible, if you have the “Get Windows 10” icon in the system tray.
- Right-click on the Get Windows 10 icon in the system tray.
- Select Check your upgrade status.
- In the upper-lefthand corner there will be an icon that looks like three parallel horizontal lines. (This is called the highly technical term “hamburger menu”.)
- Right-click on that and select Check your PC from under “Getting the upgrade”. It will tell you if there will be any problems with upgrading your system.
In other news, Service release 1 is apparently coming out next week to fix some “issues” with Win 10. Waiting until then might solve the not loading program.
Because the whole point of Windows 10 is that Microsoft is trying to get everyone on the same version of Windows. The system requirements are not supposed to be any higher.
That’s the point of making the free upgrade only last a year, even. So, later, if you find that software you need that would still run on your older PC requires Windows 10, you’d be straight out of luck.
(Of course, other than Microsoft products, this is unlikely. Most developers still support Windows XP. The ones that don’t only don’t because something broke.)
I have windows 7 and that is supposed to be compatible with windows 10.
This is a misunderstanding on your part. It’s your computer that has to be compatible, not different versions of Windows - in other words, Windows 7 is compatible with computer but Windows 10 isn’t and that depends entirely on your computer itself, and has nothing to do with what version of Windows you run now.
I’ll add my vote to the “don’t bother with Win 10” team.
Most reports I’ve read indicate that Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 both use significantly less resources than the Windows 7. Gaming performance is widely indicated to be about 10-20% better as well. That’s what motivated my upgrade to 10, after not bothering with 8.
Imagine William Shatner saying that. Truly classic.
The D630 will not even run Windows 8.1. This is not a 32 vs. 64 bit issue as Win8 x64 runs just fine.
Unfortunately, Windows 8.0 is the end of the line for the D630
Hi guys,
It’s me again.
I just went on the windows 10 site for the hell of it and it asked for my email address and said that my copy of windows 10 is ready for me and they will let me know when to get it.
Today is 8/5/2015.
Nah, don’t bother waiting around. Instead go to this thread and follow the link in the first post (and read the rest of the thread, too, as it has useful info in it).
