So far I am linking Windows 7. The upgrade went fine (although since it was from Windows XP it was really a new install.) Some notes for others:
I bought an upgrade online. The advert said that qualifying products included Windows XP home (which I had.) When it arrived the container said: Upgrade designed for Windows Vista. I nearly sent it back - thinking that this meant I needed a different disk for XP. It only meant that a straight upgrade path exists only for Vista. You can still use this disk, but you end up doing an install and a reinstall of all your software.
The install went smoothly, for the most part. I have two sound cards, one on the motherboard and a high-end one. Windows 7 currently only sees the one on the motherboard. I have tried installing drivers, but so far nothing. I don’t care too much really, so I will postpone working with it.
For the most part I like it, except for the learning curve. It isn’t significantly different from Vista, but for some reason I like it better. (Haven’t put my finger on why yet.)
My Norton Ghost does not seem to be compatible - I am investigating what can be done (beyond buying a new copy.) Windows 7 has a backup of its own though, so I may not bother.
I am still installing other things, if I run across more incompatibilities I will let you know.
I’m curious about that, if you don’t mind my asking – how was it? What are it’s capabilities? Did you have (or do you know of) any issues? Does it also support migration to a new computer?
I should mention that I’m asking on behalf of 1 or 2 users at work; I’m a linux guy myself (although I maintain XP, OS X, and Ubuntu boxen). I’ve just recently had to claim ignorance about MS’s tools when asked about an XP → Win7 upgrade – it’d be nice to have at least 2nd hand anecdotes to pass along…
