Windows & Download Speeds

I have been wondering something similar. According to FCC regulations, modems can not provide speeds faster than 56Kbps. However, I am not in the US, and don’t think I need to worry about FCC rules. My modem driver has only one option: the country. It says:

“Selecting a country other than the one in which you are currently located may cause your modem to be configured in a way that violates the telecommunication regulations/laws of that country.”

Well, my country is not in their list. So which country has the most liberal regulations in regard to modem speed?

I’m really sorry about the duplicate posts. It’s as if my modem knew that I was up to mischief, and caused these problems.

Holy cow, six reports, is that a record? (intentional reporting disqualified, let’s not start a contest here).

Gatsby, I live in Seattle and a lot of my friends are Microserfs, hence the source of my information. Not a very good cite, huh? I am asking for docs on how the damn thing works under the covers, but don’t hold your breath…

56K modems cannot go faster than 56K under any circumstances. For some time, the FCC required that they operate at 53K or less in the US, but I’ve heard that they removed that restriction. They certainly did propose to remove the regulation.

However, the maximum speed is set by the modem that did not initiate the call. In other words, it’s the settings of the modem at the other end that count here, not the settings of your modem.

I believe that the country selection has to do with signaling frequncies and how the call is placed rather than the maximum speed of the connection. If your country isn’t on the list, I have no idea what to do. Whatever works, I suppose.

Its not your modem that posts 6 times. Sometimes I have to wait 5 minutes for my post to process. However, in that time its really easy to just open a new browswer window FILE:NEW: navigator window to keep reading the board.

ren,

If you do get your hands on some docs, I would be interested in checking them out. I won’t be holding my breath, but thanks for the effort.

Here’s a pretty good semi-technical explanation of how 56K (v.90) modems work:
