Again, thanks to all. I’m writing this on my home computer, thanks to Casdave. Casdave, “Disconnect if call idle for more than” was not x’d in, but was grayed out. Therefore, I may be disconnected shortly. I don’t know. Anyway, what a difference. I can actually read the threads and the postings. I mean not only is it much bigger, but it is much clearer.
It’s me again, with two more questions. I got knocked off last night again after about 20 minutes (again).
Handy, my wsock32.3ll is 28k. The modem is 56k. Is there any relationship? How do I change it to your recommendation?
Casdave, How do I download a download manager? How do I get GoZilla on the web to download?
Last attempt after this I’m out of ideas.
Go to ‘Control Panel’
Next click on ‘Dial-up networking’
A list of your dial-up conections is displayed.
Click on the connection you wish to use most, usually it will have a blue tick next to it.(make sure you are not connected on that service at the time or the wrong dialogue box comes up)
Click on ‘Properties’
Click on the ‘Dialing’ tab
If the ‘Enable idle disconnect’ is checked then uncheck it or you could modify the contents of the ‘Disconnect if idle for’ box
Next uncheck the ‘Disconnect when connection may not be needed’ box.
This was the item I actually meant to mention last time, sorry about that.
The correct name of that download manager is
Go!Zilla
I might add that I find Windows Me is rather flaky when trying to disconnect or shut down, especially if I’m using a program that dials-up an internet connection automatically.
A friend of mine has had similar problems with an overlay installation on top of Win98. He read up about some of the problems in a PC mag which gave links to bug fixes. It also advised that you should only use these fixes as an absolute last resort as they can sometimes damage the installation.
At that he reverted to Win98.
Hope this helps.
“Handy, my wsock32.3ll is 28k. The modem is 56k.”
Nope, no connection there.
Can only say when a similar thing like this happened to me once, I took a phone cord & attached wires right to the box outside & then to the computer & didn’t get disconnected. So I put in a new phone jack inside, about $3.00
To find software try putting it into your search engine, Download Accelarator is a small program so you might get it in 20 mins.
Only other option if you can’t increase your connection time is to try find a copy on a magazine cover disc or get one from a friend.
Since both those programs are freeware they are often found on useful utlility roundup discs.
