> So naturally many people are going to find breastfeeding in public to be disgusting.

You’re using the fact that we don’t shit in public to argue that lots of people find public breastfeeding disgusting? _Disgusting?_ You don’t think that’s a bit much? I think someone who finds public breastfeeding to be disgusting is the one with the problem, not the mother or child.

Well, of course it is. I’m not sure anyone is arguing that it’s not deliberately there. What I was saying that I can actually believe it was not technically planned, that it’s something that came up on set and they ran with it, realizing a good idea when they saw it. Happens to me as a creative all the time.

But, yes, of course it was used thoughtfully and deliberately for the message it sends/impression it makes.

No, I’m trying to say that there are long running and deeply ingrained reasons why people would find it objectionable that have nothing to do with wanting to keep women down, or whatever the villainization of the day happens to be.

And those reasons are all stupid and wrong. If somebody automatically equates a baby feeding from a breast with an adult sucking a cock and wants to prohibit women from doing the former as a consequence, then yeah, they are restricting her from performing a natural act because of their own tiny filthy minds. And yeah, however noble and pure they might consider their motives, that means they want to keep women down. I might think that a man playing football in public is an act of sexual perversity since scoring a goal is obviously a mockery of conception, but most people would recommend therapy for me rather than a ban for him.

There is no history whatsoever of people finding it gross for other people to eat in public. The fact that they find other, completely unrelated, activities gross is irrelevant, because those other activities are completely unrelated.

> I don’t have strong feelings on the message one way or the other, but I don’t believe anything happens “casually” in a political ad. “Oh, was I breast feeding? I didn’t even notice.”

It was quite evidently deliberate. If you’ve ever seen a commercial shoot or scripted interview you’d realize that there is no unplanned activity anywhere in the sightline because it causes the subject to break visual contact with the camera. This is obviously calculated to both engage mothers in this issue (“She’s just like me! Her issue must be valid!”) and provoke outrage in the sort of people who get offended by even the brief sight of a woman’s breast in public and getting free publicity. I think the use of young children in political ads is highly manipulative and really inconsiderate to the interests of the child, but that kind of falls into the category of “Everyone is doing it, why shouldn’t I?”, and does occasionally provide unintended humor such as [showing how even Ted Cruz’ daughter doesn’t like him](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WIuhdfmCzdI).

Bisphenol A and general the use of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins should be reduced or eliminated in food packaging and containers for a number of reasons including potential bioreactivity and non-degradable waste, and it is unfortunate that the facts of this issue cannot stand alone, but politics is primarily about appealing to and manipulating our social monkey affective systems, not a dry statement of scientific information that most people don’t want to hear and will forget in thirty seconds. Yet another reason to welcome and encourage the coming of our benevolent robotic overlords.

^This. I could care less if people breastfeed in public as long as their not making a scene. Saw a lady once who though it was her right to breastfeed her children in the middle of a swim lap lane in a pool. WTH:smack:

Yea, but that’s b/c most men don’t look at two bottles next to each other and imagine fucking them.
(_Most_.) 😃

It’s inherently discriminatory that women of pubescent age and older are expected to cover their breasts while men of every age walk around shirtless most anywhere and no one clutches their pearls.

While that is objectively true, women inarguably have greater control over their faculties when it comes to oggling other peoples’ bodies. I was hanging out and having a conversation with a lesbian friend one night when an attractive young woman in a tight t-shirt walked past. I thought I had given an essentially involuntary but very inconspicuous side-eye without breaking stride in the conversation and that my friend hadn’t even seen her, and then she called me out on it; “Yeah, I saw it, too, but you don’t see my tongue hanging out like a coonhound on the hunt. Wipe the drool off your chin.” Well, that does activate some basic affective systems below the neocortex. Evolutionary neuroscience is my excuse.

Anyway, breastfeeding an infant is a completely normal and not salacious activity that is fine to do in public, but it really doesn’t belong in a political ad any more than dancing girls, automatic weapons, or blatant threats against political opponents. However, we’ve seen all of the above in recent years with no sign of abatement, so if breastfeeding on camera is what it takes to ‘balance the scales’ or get public attention, I can’t find much call to be particularly outraged about it. And if it would get Scott Walker out of office and away from destroying the educational and environmental institutions of the state of Wisconsin, I’d watch ads filmed at Art’s Performing Center despite my vow to never, ever be tricked or cajoled into going there again.

But it’s porn or nudity or gross or something? I’m sure it was all done like this just to get the response you’re expecting. It should be very easy for her to rebut all the complaints with ‘what? I was feeding my kid and you’re mad. Don’t you have something better to be doing with your time?’ IOW, it seems like she’s setting up a gotcha.
