From the sub-heading in the Smithsonian article: _The state’s Department of Natural Resources granted permits to about 1,500 hunters to kill 119 wolves, but 216 were shot_ and… _Critics cite the short length of the hunting period, the 24-hour window for hunters to report their kills, and the unusually high number of hunting permits as reasons that the hunt exceeded the quota by 82 percent, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel . The state sold 1,547 permits, 13 times higher than the quota of 119 wolves and the highest ratio of hunters to target wolves of any past wolf hunting season, per the AP._ Umm, what did they think was going to happen? The wildlife managers will have a better data on success rates and the wolves will a bit more wary of human smells and activity. Next year they alter the harvest amount based on this year. They look at the goals of the program and estimates based on expected survival. They also alter the number of available tags based on reported success rates. Now they have two years worth of data. Rinse and repeat. After a few years they have pretty reliable data. ---

They need to at least make this hunt more interesting. One hunter at a time with a bag limit of one wolf. Bows and arrows only. No technology, no access to vehicles or shelter. ---

I have no words. The only fitting justice would be to arm the wolves with rapid-fire assault rifles, at least making it a fair contest. I’m astounded whenever I see statistics about wolf populations. I made a busy traffic-infested trip to the Big City today and there were probably more hoo-mans directly in my way, in cars and on foot, than the total wolf population of Ontario. In any case, hunting wolves is seriously regulated here. ---
