Not only do they try to make it look like a very minor cut was some sort of inexplicable demand to destroy America’s security after 9/11, they leave out the fact that their own new CIA chief actually supported far bigger cuts that had actual personnel cuts (unlike Kerry’s). It’s be pretty low if the ad itself wasn’t so stupid. ---

Somewhere around 1798 I would figure. This was not on US soil, however, which would bring us to the destruction of the USS Chesapeak by the British in 1812. Still, wtf?! ---

What if I really **like** wolves? How am I supposed to respond to this ad? Wolves are beautiful, intelligent creatures, perfectly suited for their ecological niche. They mate for life and grieve if their partner is lost. They adopt orphaned cubs and there is no needless fighting within the pack. They cull the weak and sick animals from the herds on which they prey. Basically, we’ve been studying them and living with them for long enough that all the past stories about their vicious, untrustworthy natures have melted into the mists of ancient myth. Only the pathologically ignorant or the unapologetically mendacious will still support the Grimm Brothers view of the wolf as a demonic creature belched from the darkness of our collective id. Which, I suppose, is exactly the point. “Rejecting the politics of fear,” my grandmother’s ass nozzle. “Oh shit! It’s a fucking mountain lion!” I think I peed on myself. Just a little. But enough. ---

“Oh Jesus, I think it has two heads!!” First good laugh I’ve had all weekend. Man, I feel better now. Honestly, marsupials would have been a much scarier choice. But wolves? That would no doubt be a terrifying comparison, if this were 13th century Europe. For crying out loud, there are breeds of domestic chicken these days that are more frightening looking. Rove should get out to the mall more often; otherwise he might have realized that it’s unwise to choose as a fearmongering image an animal that is sold in plush form at KayBee Toys.
