My WAG is that they can’t impose the orders on someone **just because that person has mental health problems or is an alcoholic** , and the reporter or someone who edited the story garbled it.

It’s my understanding that the legal system for Scotland is separate than that of England and Wales.

This actually sounds like it could be a good idea. I wonder if we could somehow revoke the alcohol buying/possessing/drinking privileges of repeat DUI offenders.

Quitting drinking can be very dangerous for alcoholics. I would understand not being allowed to give alcoholics orders not to buy or drink _any_ alcohol, because often they need to reduce their use before stopping altogether.
This said, everything I’ve read about Asbos and similar behavioural orders show them to be extremely prone to abuse, so I don’t approve of the concept in the first place.

How does Drinking Banning Order = Asbo? What is Asbo supposed to stand for?
P.S. She can still enter the legal profession, right? Or work for Starbucks?

I thought about that, but why not just order them to detox first? The people who need this most are gonna be alcoholics, so it’s pretty much useless if they’re granted immunity from it.

Enforcement is going to be difficult, unless you just mandate that everybody gets carded for every sale. Plenty of people–perhaps most over 30 years old–regularly purchase alcohol without being carded.
We do have something similar though…many dui convictions result in some period of time on probation. On of the typical conditions of probation, at least in my area, is a prohibition on consuming alcohol, or any other non-prescription drug.

Good point. If it was proven to save lives, though, I wouldn’t mind swiping my ID every time.

And it’s perfectly legal for her to drink it at those friends’ houses. She’s only banned from public drinking.
And what about liquor stores? I saw bars, and no public drinking, but no restriction on, say getting it from the supermarket. Or does that just not happen in England?

I really want to party with this chick.
I’d bet this kind of thing gets her famous in the U.S. and she moves here next year to be a famous party host. At least at the bars I got to a girl that looks like that could take a swing at a bartender and only get thrown out for the night.

You mean like giving them probation and breathalyzers for their vehicles? The threat of punishment already isn’t enough to get a routine drunk driver to stop driving drunk. Preventing a drunk from going to the bar won’t stop him from drinking before running to the convenience store for smokes or to his buddy’s to party, either.
I will be very distressed if any part of the US adopts any new policy remotely similar to the ASBOs.
