Like I said, I’m not about to defend every little crazy thing the group stands for, as I don’t do that with any of the other organizations I support either (for instance, I may be a registered, donating Democrat, but I far from agree with the party 100% of the time), but again, I specifically take issue with the fact that no-kill shelters are the only humane option.

Certainly, the quote you picked seems pretty damning (“WE NEED MONEY THOUGH!”), but in all of my experience with the organization, their position is more like what I presented before: it’s inhumane to stuff animals into a shelter to spend their entire lives being unloved and miserable. While no-kill shelters should be the goal, the reality is that our society is one chock full of backyard breeders and idiots who don’t fix their dogs because it’s “mean.” There will never be a demand for the current supply, so no-kill shelters aren’t a reality resource wise. I genuinely believe forcing a dog to spend its life like that, likely never to be adopted, is cruel. And yes, the money can be used to help the animals that are more likely to get adopted/ poor families who need help caring for their animals.

**curlcoat** ’s comment is a bit insulting because it seems to suggest I’m ignorant to the craziness of some of the animal liberation folks in PETA-- I assure you, I’m not. Like most organizations I support but don’t 100% agree with, I ultimately have decided that PETA does more good than harm. I donate to their programs that donate dog houses to poor families in cold places; programs that work to fix, vaccinate, and feed animals; programs to educate people about and legislate against animal cruelty (everything from circus elephants to dogs and cats); and education and legislation pertaining to the cruelty (and frankly unhealthy for us impacts) of a lot of (but not all) factory farming. No organization is perfect and while we can agree to disagree on the ultimate good vs harm of PETA, I think it’s hard to deny that they do have at least some good programs and do some good work.

Well, speaking for myself, owning a cat _is_ slavery. I live in constant humble servitude to his every whim and demand. 😃

> My parents have a psycho neighbour. One time, the people across the road were away and my mum was feeding, giving meds & snuggling their dear old cat, “Poes Jan”. After two days Poes Jan didn’t show. Mum was sad, thinking he’d died and looked all around the garden to try and find him. Then she remembered she’d seen Mrs. Psycho Neighbour walking around with a cat basket, while they don’t have a cat. She confronted her.
>
> Mrs. Psycho Neighbour had gone into their garden, stolen Poes Jan and taken him TO BE PUT DOWN!
>
> My mum actually contacted someone for legal advice for the people across the road, but they decided to just tell her that if she ever came onto their property again, or touched one of their animals it wouldn’t be a nice quiet injection for her, it would be a baseball bat to the face.
>
> My papa subtly let her know the same thing goes for our animals. I still think they should’ve taken her to court.
>
> Mrs Psycho Neighbour’s reasoning was that the cat was old and the neighbours car wasn’t there, so it was ok to murder their cat. She votes Party for the Animals (an actual political party in the Netherlands), so she obviously thought she was some kind of hero.

I think that someone should have taken her to court, too. And alerted any vets and clinics in the area about what Psycho Neighbor had done, so that they wouldn’t put down any animals that she brings in at a future time.

That’s some crazy shit there! I wonder if PETA will do any of it.

They aren’t and I’m not sure anyone here said they were. The only mention was wondering if the crazy woman dropped her stolen pets off at kill shelters, where they would be dust in just a few days - not enough time for the owners to find them.

You have a couple of fallacies going on there, the biggest one being “There will never be a demand for the current supply”, but I am wondering - is the only thing you agree with PETA on is their stance on kill shelters?

I’m sorry you were insulted, but the facts are that most of the people in PETA - those that run it - are anti-pet, and all of the animal liberation folks they support are nuts. Honestly, it’s been proven over and over that their end goal is to eliminate all pets - is that something you would support?

Do you have any links to these programs?

I have not read any of their legislation that does any good, and most of it does quite a bit of harm. Such as out lawing factory farming of chickens in California, their legislative idea of “cruelty” to dogs and cats, their desire to spay/neuter every last dog and cat they can, etc.

I’m sorry, I’m not seeing any good in them and there is a LOT of bad.

But it’s indicative of what I see as the hypocrisy that is central the PETA’s leadership - they insist on zero tolerance for everyone else but then turn around and cut themselves some slack. PETA may be right that financial reasons make it impossible for them to maintain no-kill shelters. But would they accept these same arguments from a circus or a zoo or a lab that they are fighting against? They should hold themselves up to the same standards they want to apply to others.

Actually, you’re right about alerting shelters and vets in the area about Psycho Neighbour. I hadn’t thought of that, but I’m going to get my parents on to that asap. I wonder if they could get their hands on a picture of her? I guess that shelters and vets have a sort of regional network to share this info? Like hotels share black lists for the region.

I agree I would’ve taken her to court for all she is worth, in lieu of kneecapping her, which is what my gut would like. But it’s totally up to them of course, and they felt it wouldn’t bring their beloved cat back anyway, and they just didn’t want to even see her. If she so much as gives my dog a funny look she will rue the day.

Here’s what I don’t understand. PETA has some crazy, crazy members, who suck up valuable money and publicity. There are other animal helping organizations like the ASPCA who don’t have that problem. Why stick with PETA when you could just join one of the others instead?

There’s the American Anti-Vivisection Society, which addresses many of the same animal rights issues that PETA does but without the controversy.

I have to say, I’m really surprised to hear this. I was well aware of PETA’s nuttiness, but I always thought the HSUS, like the ASPCA, was a pretty sane, reasonable organization. At very least, they’re not [anti-pet](http://www.peta.org/about/why-peta/pets.aspx) like PETA; [quite the opposite](http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/pets/). What kind of hijinx have I missed?

Because it’s not mutually exclusive-- it’s not like I find one organization to donate to for life and that’s that. I can donate to PETA and 10 other animal rights organizations, if I’m so inclined. Like I said, I’ve decided- after lots of research- that my opinion is that PETA does more good than bad. So, because of that, I have no problem kicking them a bit of money from time to time. We can disagree on that conclusion, but I’m just explaining my choice. Nothing presented here against PETA is anything new to me, so they are all things I’ve considered before in making my choice.

I have to agree with everyone else. If you are a member of PETA you are supporting their insanity. You’re saying it’s fine to equate the deaths of six million Jews to the deaths of some broiler/fryers. You’re saying it’s fine to take animals from shelters with promises of finding homes only to illegally euthanize them and illegally dump the bodies in shopping center dumpsters. It’s your right to think that way, but own up to it, don’t shilly-shally about it.

They lie. The HSUS is as anti-pet as PETA is.
