I presume it was because your legs were way whiter than the rest of you, having been covered up all year. But I never really thought about it.
Good point. I suppose I hadn’t thought about it that way, since my legs are generally the same color as the rest of me.
We’re kind of both the same color. But I have heard women say before, “I just can’t wear shorts yet, since my legs are so white!” I presume they mean to go tan them before they can.
At the whitest, after a long winter, my legs are still caramel-ish. And then I only need 2-3 bike rides to work before they start darkening again.
Agreed on us being about the same color. Yeah, even if my legs are a bit lighter than my arms, I brown up pretty quickly out in the sunshine.
It’s ridiculous. On the right day, if the sun is directly beating down on me, I can tan a shade darker in ten minutes.
Don’t quite see how spray foundation is easier/quicker/cheaper than pantyhose. I’ve never tried it, but seems like I’d need an awful lot to cover the vast expanses of my legs, plus isn’t it hard to get on evenly? and where does all the overspray go…do you have to apply it in the shower to keep from getting it on the carpet and bedding? And I’m not all that bendy…shaving is awkward enough, I know I’d miss the backs of my knees! Plus my pale white skin is a bit (oh, this is really hard to say as an older woman who has lost some weight) saggy and crepey (there, I said it) and you cannot see that when I wear hose. And I’m not going for a dark tan look on my legs…just less pale and pasty and dead-fish-underbelly look. Even. The same color as my arms.
It’s a spray can, like hair spray. Surprisingly easy, actually- no bendiness necessary.
Personally, I’m not sure it’s EASIER than throwing on a pair of pantyhose, but I’d definitely find it a whole lot more comfortable. Personally, I don’t wear pantyhose OR leg foundation, but I have covered my tattoos (on my ankles) up with regular old makeup when need be. I can’t imagine covering a rogue vein would be all that different.
I live in Japan, and they’re just as widely used here as they’ve ever been. Gross in the hot, humid summer, and I do occasionally sneak around without them, but otherwise yep, got a dress/skirt on, yer pulling on hose too. No way no how would I go to any outside client meeting without them.
I can’t wait to visit the US next month and show off my pasty white, sickly-looking, varicose-vein sporting (thanks Mom! and Grandma on Dad’s side! Way to ensure I get 'em too!) splotchy legs that never, ever tan! Because yeah, hose do suck.
MY legs don’t “brown up”, tan to a delightful caramel color, or any other color except staying a glaring, blinding pork belly white with a bright red overlay if I am unfortunate enough to be stuck in the sun for any length of time. I remember years ago, everyone in my office building wore white hose, and then it went out of fashion overnight, because it made your legs look ‘fat’. Well, without hose, if my bare legs look 'fat, should I then wear black tights or dark hose?
I hate them. For one, since I’m clumsy, I’m lucky if they last for more than a single wearing without getting a run. For two, I haven’t found a pair that fit since I was ten. Last time I tried to wear some I couldn’t get them past my thighs, before that they wouldn’t stay up so I’d end up walking around with the crotch at my thighs and ducking into a bathroom at every opportunity to tug them up again.
The same goes with tights. Thigh highs? More like knee highs. I’m just too tall/big for even the largest sizes I’ve been able to find easily, so I just go bare legged in skirts and look for shoes that feel comfy with bare feet.
I rarely wear skirts anymore. The only reason I’d wear nylons is to wear a skirt. Even now, all my skirts are mid-shin length, so I wear nylon knee-highs with those. It doesn’t feel any different wearing knee-high nylons from wearing socks which is what I normally wear.
I like wearing long skirts, oddly enough. I just don’t do it very often.
But yeah, nylons suck.

Among a certain subset of younger women (see the lookbook.nu links previously posted), sheer stockings/hose are definitely in style, with the caveat that they are not skin toned. Note that these women tend to be on the fashion-forward side of things. For the more typical 20-somethings, bare legs and tan is in. However the typical 20-somethings don’t often get dressed up to the extent that nylons would be appropriate. The only exception are weddings, which are normally in the summer, when it is hot enough that most eschew nylons.
Personally, I love nylon stockings, but I have a retro/fashion-forward vibe to my wardrobe. Stockings > hose, always. The entire hose has to be replaced if one side gets a run, hose is a pita in the bathroom, it makes you prone to yeast infections, and looks unsexy when your clothes are off. I love the look of garters, and I love wearing them to work, being all sexy without anyone knowing. Work-appropriate shoes often give me blisters - not just the heels; flats too - and nylons protect against this.
I am an older man! Old enough to remember most women mostly wearing real garter nylons most of the time -if they wore skirts or dresses. I remember checking women’s legs out-always! I always felt they almost always knew! Let’s call it women’s intiuition! My favorite was my Aunt Anita! She always wore a dress and rht nylons with her black garter obg. (Yes, Ilooked whenever I could! She always walked around our house (or hers!) in her rht stockinged feet . I was always aroused! She always knew-If we visited -and she didnt have her nylons on-she would go and put them on when she saw I was checking her out! I always wanted to stroke her nyloned legs-sometimes I tried! I wasn’t successful-but that just increased my desire! I was imrinted forever! I always would have liked to gomuch further with her! I know (because a few women have admitted this to me-that their girdles and nylons pulled tight upon their legs-and elsewhere were like lovers constantly arressing them! There!! So hot-and not in the least embarassed. Oh! and my aunt was about 39 years older than me! I wish I could have come home everyday to her as my wife-she was so incredibly feminine!
