Living in the same country as [people like this](http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/apus_story.asp?category=1110&slug=Yearbook%20Tuxedo) is probably adversly affecting our brain cell count. Kinda like eating lead paint chips.

> GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – County school officials are backing a principal’s decision to bar a picture of a lesbian student dressed in a tuxedo from the high school yearbook.
>
> Sam Ward, principal of Fleming Island High School, said he pulled the senior class picture because Kelli Davis was wearing boy’s clothes. His decision was debated Thursday at a Clay County school board meeting that drew 200 people, but the board took no action, and Superintendent David Owens said the decision will stand.

Wait, wait, it gets better:

Is this boot camp, or is this a fucking high school yearbook?

_Jesus_.

I must be disconnected from reality, because I can’t imagine how people could be this dumb.

It’s the job of the school to prepare kids for harsh reality after all.

Good point. I wonder if the principal would have had a problem if she was simply going for that oh-so-retro late 80’s/early 90’s “women in suit jackets and ties” look.

Or a really, really uptight riff on Avril Lavigne.

I’d say it has everything to do with it. Obviously girls wear pants. And they probably wouldn’t have a problem with a guy in a dress as long as it was a “joke”. My bet is if the kid in question was not an aknowelged lesbian they would have let the matter slide.

Assholes.

Why not? That’s the way it was in my high school. Then again, that was over 20 years ago and my small town was generally at least 10 years behind the times. Then, of course, there’s this lovely quote “When uniformity is compromised, then authority no longer holds.” Welcome to Stepford, ladies. Check your minds at the door. You won’t be needing them.

Exactly. Because this girl is _obviously_ flaunting! her! sexuality! by wearing what she wants to wear. It’s fine, you know, as long as “they” don’t scare the horses reading the yearbook.

Right – unwritten standards that you only find out about after you have broken them.

Well, at least one person at that high school gets out of this mess looking good. Congratulations to Keri Sewell for having the courage to stand up to an autocratic principal.

Any escape might help to smooth
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth

The world gets scary when lyrics by Canadian power trios are coming true.

Ugh. Yeah. And having a female wear a little scrap of fabric that doesn’t at all cover her shoulders and is fairly low cut is nice and proper (ignoring that fact that if someone were to wear a shirt like that to school, at most places it would be against the ‘dress code’.)

We would only know this for sure if there was another girl, a straight girl, who also wore pants in her yearbook picture and was allowed to have her picture in the yearbook.

Until then, I’m willing to see this as sexism, but not necessarily anti-lesbian.

The principal was on CNN saying that the girl was trying to use the yearbook to make a statement. Sure sounds anti-lesbian to me.

It’s not the pants, it’s the fact that she was wearing a tux instead of a dress.

Sooo, if I wear a kilt, I’m not going to get my picture in the yearbook? Woo-hoo! Another pointless high school milestone vaulted!

Gah, I don’t miss high school. Not even a little bit. Someone recently asked me what it was like when I went back go my high school reunion. I looked at her like her ears had turned into giant flaming Olympic torches.
