Women In the Military

Wait, so “not going to take this” means ‘just feel disappointed’?

I’m disappointed by your answer. And yet, I’ll take it.

Then they should get used to disappointment.

Of course we don’t have a draft currently, and we’re not likely to draft women any time soon, neither are we likely to draft men any time soon. So I guess they’ll just have to be disappointed in not being disappointed.

All we’re talking about is registering. Is it unfair that women don’t have to register, but men do? Yes. Is it super-unfair? No it isn’t. So we could fix it just be not requiring men to register, and be done with it.

Would it be unfair if women didn’t get drafted but men did? Yes. Would it be super-unfair? Yes it would. So let’s not do that.

I love women in the military. It’s good. It’s truly a good sign. I want decency and honor to the military. I want to see a military respected and feared around the world.

Whether there should or shouldn’t still be a registration for a draft in the event of total mobilization, it should be gender neutral now that the nature of that service is gender neutral. In addition to federal Selective Service registration the unorganized militias in law in all or almost all states (effectively subjecting those citizens to draft by the governor) should also be changed if they still specify only males are subject to that state draft.

You assume something that may not happen, a situation that we’ve been trending away from historically, to justify your statement that you “won’t tolerate” people who mooch off the collective efforts of our military and do not serve. Your “bears scenario” doesn’t happen now, but you pretend like its the norm and accuse those of us who don’t serve as parasites. That’s why your analogy is outdated and limited. It doesn’t happen anymore. It may not happen again in the future. And yet your react as if its current. What you should have said was that in the future, if some situation appears where a draft is necessary, and people refuse, THEN and only then would you consider people parasites. But you fall over yourself trying to demonize the non-military when its only due to a fantasy you’ve constructed in your head.

You never said that “sometime in the future if we need a draft”, you said the people now are parasites even though we don’t have a draft. Your bears are non-existent and there is no other village

You’re free to believe that, of course, but the fact is that conscientious objector exemptions were available during Vietnam, Korea, WWII and WWI. So you’d be wrong.

We already have a big enough military without forcing 2 years of service for every 18 year old. Not positive on my number but as I understand it 4 million kids turn 18 each year. So 2 years of service for all would put our military at 8 million plus you’d have a bunch who would stay in so probably 9-10 million. We already have a fighting force that could destroy any nation on earth, and potentially create a dictator here at home. We should be working to shrink our military like we did after every war before WWII. BTW I served 6 years after 9/11.

Update/bump to the thread: A judge has just ruled that requiring men only to register for Selective Service is unconstitutional. Presumably women will soon be required to register as well.

Or, in a sensible country, the men would stop having to register.

Nvm, I didn’t realize another GD thread had already been bumped today.
