Women's March On Washington -- are you going?

It would be an extremely naive person who was marching because she thought it would move the GOP and trump. They are immovably glued to the reactionary don’t-confuse-me-with-the-facts ideology (to be very exact, the GOP is. trump is glued to his own narcissistic asshole). If you take a cursory glance at successful protest movements, the right wing ideologues are only dragged along, at the very end, screaming and flailing, by the massive flood of mobilized public opinion.

Agreed, and my wife would agree too. Still, she wants to go and be a part of this. It’s a chick thing, they be crazy.

As much as I hate Trump, I’m not participating. Along with the disorganized logistics, there’s not been any stated goal has there? I mean sure, you can just demonstrate to “raise awareness”, but unless you present an actionable goal it’s just a waste of time in my opinion.

Exactly.

You could be right. On the other hand, got a better suggestion?

I certainly don’t; I think this march and others like it are one of the few things that gets Cheetolini’s attention - remember how much he enjoys his own throngs, so much he went back for a victory lap of them. When he sees them but cannot control them, he’ll be angry and show his lack of style, substance and comportment and that will chip away at his cult of personality. He’ll say the same dismissive things he always says about women who aren’t enthusiastically agreeing w/ him, I have no doubt. But more people will realize how many women are fed up, concerned and energized enough to gather and march, and I hope that will make an impression.

Action, rather than reaction, is what’s going on. You don’t sit back and let a dirty wound heal, hoping for the best.

Yes. Wait until the inevitable huge woman’s issue come up, then march. Trust me, it will happen and soon.

Look at the Indians and their oilfield, they had a single issue. It wasnt even that great a issue, but they won. Civil rights marches worked. Single issue.

Be focused.

You are fighting against entrenched conservatism and well-financed lobbyists. Money talks, but votes talk louder- IF those votes are loud enough and on a single issue. General protest noise is ignored.

This march will make some people feel good, but nothing else. Like Occupy.

Well, that pipeline is still going in.

Just not sure why we need to wait until abortion is illegal, etc. It’s not like they are going to surprise us with it.

It is?

Wiki: *On December 4, the Army announced that it would not grant an easement for the pipeline to be drilled under Lake Oahe.[100] The announcement was made by the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works), Jo-Ellen Darcy:

Although we have had continuing discussion and exchanges of new information with the Standing Rock Sioux and Dakota Access, it’s clear that there’s more work to do. The best way to complete that work responsibly and expeditiously is to explore alternate routes for the pipeline crossing.[101]*
Wait until they propose a significant bill.

How about we show so many faces in a march on Washington to begin w/ that they don’t even try to introduce a bill that threatens the rights of women? Waiting is acquiescing.
What threatens you, DrDeth, about women marching w/o your express approval?

  1. Yes, there’s no easement granted (yet). But the pipeline surely will be built, maybe not under that particular river. Most of it is already built, in fact. Just as an aside, in my opinion, there is no “responsible” way to build an oil pipeline.

  2. With a republican congress and president, they can ram through a bill into law before you could find out about it, log onto facebook and post “shouldn’t we march about this?”

Here’s the platform of the march.

For me, participating in this isn’t as much of a focused protest against one issue as much as it’s an energy builder. We have a huge fight ahead of us. Being with a massive group of people, showing solidarity, building connections, is valuable and inspiring. Listening to the speakers who will be there and having conversations with fellow participants bolsters all of us for the fight ahead. This is a kick-off. A facebook group I belong to, which was created to help organize locals getting to the march, is filled with people posting concrete action items and help with following through on those items: best phone numbers to call, information about issues, thing that our federal and local legislatures are addressing that we can weigh in on, talking points, etc. Conversations with the women we will be staying with in D.C. have included which Metro station is closest and also ideas about what organizational methods our local activist groups are using.

I’m driving down from NJ to meet my sister (former poster kiffa) who is flying in from Florida. I have written my senators and representative twice in the past month and I have a feeling I’m going to be doing that a lot in the future. It’s been a while since I have felt it so important to express myself. We’re focusing on women’s rights and reproductive health with our signage.

No

As of now there are 3x more bus parking permits for the women’s march than there are bus parking permits for the inauguration itself.

The incoming administration believes they are answering to the unresolved anger of constituents, and this is indeed how he got elected. However to now face constant, significant unresolved anger by other constituents may very well have an effect.

It sure will be interesting to see.
An aside for everyone who is going to drive to D.C. yourselves - it is extremely unlikely that you will find parking in the district that day. I highly suggest you plan on parking at a Metro lot and taking the subway in. This is a very difficult city to move around in during events like this.

Good luck.

I’m going!

Thanks for posting that.

Um, er… argh. They’ve tucked the equal pay issue in there. I’m not against women and men earning the equitable pay for the same jobs but I think many studies have shown that there is a variety of economic and social reasons for the discrepancy today. It can’t be fixed by a politician passing a bill (or a president telling congress to do so). Their platform needs to be more focused still. Campaign reforms, electoral college reforms and other things to prevent unqualified people from being elected to president.

Getting on the bus to DC tonight. Gonna be a loooooong Saturday!

Good luck and thanks for going. I’m sure I’ll never understand the “why bother” attitude. March now, march again and again. Complacency is the danger, not too much presence.

Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
