No, my anger is directed at the BernieBros and Deny270 folks easily manipulated by Wikileaks and lies.
She remains a fantastic candidate who garnered millions more votes. It took outside interference and home grown paranoia to bring her down, and it barely succeeded. Any other candidate would have been toast.
And I’d like to point out that these marches weren’t angry. They were hopeful and powerful and supportive. Yes there were anti-trump signs, but there were even more about what was being celebrated and supported. You should have gone to one.
Portland’s march was estimated at between 70,000-100,000, at least double what the estimated attendance would be. The metro was jam-packed, and it was pouring rain. Good times.
Gawd damn. The only reason she had a chance is hell is that she was running against Trump. And to be fair the only reason Trump had a chance to win was because he was running against Hillary.
I went to the march in DC and spent about 6 hours wedged in like a sardine. I couldn’t hear any of the official activities and could only occasionally get a glimpse of the nearest Jumbotron, which was a block of so away. But, the signs and chants and enthusiasm and solidarity and resolve made up for that. So glad I went.
I would like to respectfully urge progressives not to waste energy now rehashing the 2016 election; what matters is every election coming up at the local, state and national levels.
We’re almost finally home. My ass is thoroughly kicked - didn’t get to sit down at all between 8 and 6, and now back on the bus. My back is killing me, I’m not sure my feet will go back in my shoes, and something is seriously suspect about my ankle.
Glad I went though. Considering the coverage I’ve seen I think we made a statement.
So many of my friends went to marches today - some went to DC, others were in Cleveland, North Carolina, Los Angeles, Maryland, Columbus and San Francisco.
I wasn’t at a march, I was at a sci-fi film festival that I go to every year. I joked that I was there representing Women In Science [Fiction Film Festivals]. When I got home I scrolled through my Facebook feed and saw tons and tons of amazing photos and sentiments from women AND men I am friends with. Also a lot of photos from celebs I follow who participated in marches.
I did see, of course, one guy bitching about whiny crybaby protesters and people rioting or whatever. It absolutely baffled me to think what he must have been watching or reading to come to that conclusion.
Today was as peaceful and as pink and as diverse as one could find.
There were protest marches in Sydney and Melbourne - about 4 or 5000 people at each, from what I gather.
I continue to be astounded at the strong anti-Trump sentiments I’m hearing from people in Australia - my social media feeds are choc-a-block full of Australian folks who are furious (as in, angry, outraged, depressed etc) over the fact Trump won.
None of them have been able to clearly articulate why they care so much about the outcome of a foreign country’s election that doesn’t impact their day to day lives; I just cop a lot of abuse for having a non-approved opinion.
Brexit, for example, will have an effect on Australia (in that it’s probably about to get a lot easier to get a UK work or even residence visa) so I totally get people here having an opinion on that. But from an Australian perspective, it doesn’t actually affect anyone here if Trump repeals the Affordable Care Act or does manage to build a big-ass wall between the US and Mexico.
Again, I get people having an academic interest or view of this as part of the “not living under a rock” approach to life, but I really, truly don’t get the having a really strong, passionate opinion on it to the point of raging about it on social media or attending rallies to protest the election.
On our way home from D.C. Fantastic experience. The National Guard were great…I was worried about that, as Trump had booted the longtime D.C. head and installed his guy, as of 12:01 pm on 1/20. The NG were super friendly, though. People were handing their cameras up so that the NG, standing on top of their trucks, could take photos of the crowd for them. They were giving out hugs and taking selfies with people. When Alicia Keyes came out on stage, the NG guys practically broke their necks to get a view. Hilarious. Metro staff was fantastic, staff at the restaurant we went to for dinner was great. I’m from the D.C. area and I’ve never seen the city acting so friendly. And, of course, the march was inspiring.
Once the environmental protections are rolled back and trade agreements are mucked about w/, effects will roll toward Australia and the rest of the world sooner than you realize. The US is a big gorilla w/ a lot of poo to fling; sometimes that poo can catch a windstream that delivers it to your door. Maybe get your news and information from other than Facebook news links and you’ll understand better why isolationism serves only the selfish and most powerful.
Estimates are 8k-10k for the San Luis Obispo March. Which is a lot since the entire city population is only 45k (although we did get people from all over the county).
I was impressed by the support from local government and services: City Council members and County Supervisors were in attendance. The Chief of Police gave one of the speeches. Also impressed by the support from the downtown merchants, who were gracious about basically shutting down the downtown for the march. Many of them cheered and/or held up signs in support of the march as we passed.
You mean, you can’t understand how a Putin-bootlicker fascist at the head of the wealthiest most powerful country on earth with a military almost three times the size of the next largest (China) would disturb anyone in any other country?
I’m not on Facebook. Most of my news comes from the BBC or the ABC.
I’ve studied enough history to know why isolationism isn’t great, but my point is - I do not understand getting worked up over things that don’t demonstrably and materially affect you. America is not Australia, so the US president changing healthcare/abortion/gay rights laws there has nothing to do with us.
