# Wondering about Parelles Betwwn Hendrix and Lynryd Skynyrd

Well, i’ve been listening to both, with a good bit of wisdom in the listening, getting past thirty years of listening. Shit, alla of a sudden, I hear the confluence of what those guys heard and built on, and it’s so very similar.

I have my fourteen year old nephew to thank for it, really, because his sweet new mind got me to listen to Hendrix again, as a pure thing. So, now, I’m listening to the Southern Rock of Skynyrd, and I hear the same influence of Hendrix, ala guitar riffs. To me, the importance is in the influence of blues , specifically in the different avenues that influence had; Jimi’s influence was in rock, particularly West Coast, and Lyn Skyns was as the ultimate Southern band.

In listening, though, they have so much in common. Any other comments??

Jimi had some southern influences as well. Did you know that when he was in the army he was stationed at Ft. Campbell, Ky. During that time he toured the south as a sideman on the “Chitlin’ Circuit”. So Skynryd and Hendrix could have some identical influences.

Jimi was very strongly influenced by blues artists, like the “Three Kings,” and wrote his share of blues songs. He also spent time in England - that’s where he first became popular - and was influenced by guys like Eric Clapton, who were mixing blues riffs with much heavier sounds. Guys like Jimi brought the blues back to America, where it inspired further generations of bands.

Lord, I coulda typed the title a bit better, hmm? Thanks for the answers, yes, they surely had the same influences. I just had not heard them so clearly as I have recently. And, Jimi and Lynyrd Skynyrd don’t usually fall in the same circle of reference.

You’re probably right, although people will lump them both into the “classic rock” category.

You know, the Hendrix version of “Freebird” would have been pretty damn incredible.
