Woo, new Pratchet

Where the smeg did you pay £9 for your copy? Mine was £12.99!!!

Well, thanks for offering, Evil Death, but I discovered that there’s actually two editions at amazon - one is available right now (for 22,15 Euros = 15 pound btw) and it’s only the cheaper one that you have to wait for. Naturally I clicked on the link for the non-available one first. But since it’s supposed to be my birthday present I don’t care about cost and will spread the news among my friends

You paid high street? Silly wabbit - supermarkets have prices that are often as good or better than online retailers.

Tesco and Asda both have bookshops in their larger stores. They only stock “chart books”, but you can get some amazing deals. The new Jeffery Deaver short story collection is £10 off RRP, for example, and almost everything usually goes for £5 off or more. You can also sometimes get the books before official publication date.

But there’s no book selling supermarkets near me! sniff

And I know I could have ordered it off Amazon, but then I’d have had to have waited. A few quid is worth the near instant gratification.

mallocks: I just couldn’t get into it. The Nac Mac Feegle don’t tickle my funny bone, I guess. And the precocious child is not a character type I’ve ever felt any sense of identification with.

At least in “Maurice” there was the character of Keith, who played the role of the’normal’ person, swept along with events. Young Miss Aching doesn’t fill those shoes, and so I find no sympathetic character through whom I can experience the story.

thwartme

I felt he already toned down their accents in Wee Free Men, myself.

I did too. I didn’t read the book for yonks because I could never understand them, but I eventually borrowed Wee Free Men from a friend and found it quite enjoyable. However, If I never read about the Elf Queen again it will be too soon…

Well, having finished Hatful of Sky on Friday night, all I will say is that its goooood.

But the Wee Free Men’s accents have been toned down, a lot. Its just no fun with the toned down accents.

Thank’ee for the tip! Got Wee Free Men at £3.74! (or summat)

Crivens!

Crivens, indeed.
I was hesitating about paying for the hardcover, since I didn’t really like Wee Free Men, which felt like a book about the Nac Mac Feegle that derailed. And the Queen Fairy land was just annoying. But I couldn’t wait, and the hardcover was only about €5 more than the paperback will be, so I got it, and I’m glad. A much, much smoother narrative, darker even than TAMAHER, with some great truths and insight in humanity.
Extremely readable, and as I’ve said before, Pterry constantly hones the craft of writing. I can’t think of a single writer that so consistently gets better over the years. This will win him another award.

Just finished it this morning. Wonderful book!

I am surprised to note that Granny Weatherwax laughed out loud and with happiness a couple of times - is that a first?!?

Yes. Kinda the point, too; this is very unusual behaviour for Esme Weatherwax.
