Were you cozy warm or just surviving?
By spoiled modern, first-world standards, surviving. But I imagine that someone from a tougher era would have found it plenty cozy enough.
EDIT: And that was with a hasty and inexpertly-built shelter. An outdoorsman with more both experience and time might well have been able to make something even a spoiled modern would have considered cozy.
I have collected firewood this way, when camping. If you have enough territory, I imagine this would be adequate. If not, coppicing, as @MrDibble suggests, produces a high density of easy-to-process firewood in a modest area.
