I know I won’t be thanked for this, but since I’m about to see all my Internet time sucked into it, I had to share this site: [Word Sandwich](http://www.wordsandwich.com/).
Basically, try to guess the 5-letter word they’re thinking of by typing 5-letter words that are either too early or too late alphabetically.

My third guess was one letter off from the final word. It took forever to narrow it down to that.

Type in a five-letter word. If it goes “up” (i.e., to the box above the guess-box), the word you’re looking for is later than it in the alphabet. If it goes “down,” it’s earlier in the alphabet. You can use those “outsides” to narrow down the word you’re trying to guess.

I was stuck between “wards” and “wares” for a while.
5,454 points. All five words took between 11 and 14 guesses.
