> I’ve long been fascinated by the “aiery lotus munch” opening gambit. Aiery as a first word is good if you’re only giving yourself two research words, but if you get three, why stuff so many vowels into a single word? It ends up repeating ‘u’, which seems wasteful.
>
> Over the past several months I’ve occasionally tried to come up with a better combo and always failed. So finally I sat down and coded up an ‘opening book finder’ of valid wordle guesses. Feed it some letters, it’ll tell you all possible word combinations. Repeat letters allowed.

> Each one of these queries returns hundreds of possibilities, mostly using obscure words like towsy. If anyone would like a particular set of 15 letters to use for an opener, let me know and I’ll hook you up. (Or any multiple of 5. Program can handle 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 letters.)

Cool, Ellis. I was going by this wiki article on Letter frequency, [Letter frequency - Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letter_frequency), which gives this list in descending frequency:

E T A I S O N R L H D C U M G P Y F B W K Z V X J Q

What does your algorithm yield for E T A I S O N R L H D C U M G?

NUTSO GAMER CHILD, though the first word could be the more traditional SNOUT, albeit less sentence-y when combined with the other two.

Alternately, and more story than sentence:

LAUGH SNORT MEDIC

You just gave me some awesome three starter words for Sedecordle! I play that one daily as well, and my strategy has always been to put three starting words that have all the “good stuff” in them, but I’ve struggled to come up with new ones, and I get bored playing the same three start words (I only have a few), so now I’ve got more to play around with! 🙂

Above I wrote that I would use the following 15 letters if I were doing 3 research words and ignoring hard mode:

CHALK MINER TYPOS

I mentioned that each check returned hundreds of hits, mostly using obscure words. Here’s the complete list for the above letters, just to give you an idea:

I just happened to notice CREAK NYMPH TOILS, which I rather like.

ETA: Not sure why this is flagged as a reply to Bullitt. It was intended to be a standalone post.

I came up with TRACE, LIONS, DUMPY.
I often use TRACE as a starting word. LIONS will get the nine most frequent letters and C.
It looks like I leave out G and H of the top 15 but get 16 and 17.

I like this group a lot. I particularly like checking both A and O in the center position. In a perfect world the third word would have I as the third letter, but meh.

ETA: Also checking both E and Y in the last position is solid.

TRACE
OILER
Words to find the first and third letter. It took until the fifth word to finally get to F.
FOYER
Disclosure and Coincidence: Last week I lost on a practice site on a \_O\_ER word. I looked at the word list and saw five words, including FOYER that would be difficult. I still remember the five words.
After the fourth pick I knew three of the difficult words were still possible. I had those words in mind when I came up with the fifth pick.
Last night I was doing a “what if”. What if it was a “\_O\_ER” word and there were three words left (including FOYER), what would be a good fifth word. I was in the same situation of my “what if” last night - three of the five words left, including FOYER (one of the words was different from my situation last night).

After what I thought was a good start, I fell _right_ into the \_O\_ER trap. After four, I still had a choice of FOYER, BOXER, HOMER, DOZER, and JOKER (I _think_ that’s all). 10 (!) different consonants, and no valid words with consonants from four of the five words. I figured DOZER was probably the least likely, so I found a word with letters from three of the other four. Probably the hardest I’ve ever worked for a Wordle solution.

My sympathies to all who lost their streaks on this one. I almost joined you.
