I was down to STIFF, STICK, STING, and STINK. Realized afterward that STINK would have assured a four _and_ been a possible answer, so that would have been a better choice. But I ended up with the same result. No harm, no foul. ---

I went with an STI on the theory that I could then use a test word to figure out which one was β€˜it’…but STING turned out to be the winner. ---

At that point it was a probable β€œ\_OUGH” trap–I tried COUGH, confirming the \_OUGH. But I was now left with BOUGH, DOUGH, and ROUGH as options. Should have gone alphabetical! (but used a test word instead as a 6 loomed.) A 5 isn’t that much better, but at least this went quickly. ---
