After TONAL, I only saw ROYAL, LOYAL, and CORAL. I figured CORAL was unlikely since we just had CAROL, and anyway, ROYAL would give me the answer in four no matter what.
But I somehow missed trying a C in the middle. Had the answer been FOCAL, LOCAL, or VOCAL, Iβd have been screwed. A sleuth word at three was the proper move, but I got lucky. Disaster averted.
