# "Wordle," a strangely compelling word game (Part 2)

There were 12 words left after SLATE and there was no sleuth word which would guarantee a 3. BRAND left me with 4 words so I had to play another sleuth word to narrow them down to ensure a 4.

Wordlebot did it in 3. It also had 4 to choose from after its second guess and it guessed the correct one of those four. An incorrect guess could have led to it getting a 5 but Wordlebot doesn’t care about making sure that it gets it in 4 or fewer guesses so it can take chances like that.

_ **It’s a trap!** _  
Went straight to a sleuth word at two, which narrowed things down but not as much as I’d hoped.  
FLAME left me with four words, and GLAZE would at least guarantee me a five. Got some luck for the par.

I was going to say what about lears, but once again it turns out that’s not really a word. The word I was thinking of was leers. This is like roset all over again, where I get “Wordle brain” and lose the ability to spell. Lears is not creepily staring, and roset is not a type of wine. In some ways, I think wordle is making me a worse speller.

Could have also been LEASE or PSALM. Missed the latter entirely; didn’t consider that tricksy PS start. (Neither mattgg nor EllisDee had to worry about that one because their starting words eliminated it.) Saw LEASE before seeing LEASH but liked the latter better. ETA: I see newtosite went the other way on that one.

Besides not being a real word, LEARS is formed by adding S to the root so it will never be a Wordle answer.
