Looking at Scoredle, my best guess at the other seven would be sixth, sixty, softy, sooth, sooty, south, and either sotto or synth. (Scoredle of course includes words that are legit guesses but non-solutions, in this case definitely including snots, snits, and shits.

I didn’t go with my usual CHORE at 2 because I thought I’d get further trying to place the consonants I already had, than trying to find a third. Was going to go with TONIC instead, but it had already been used and I wanted at least an outside shot at the 2, so I went with TONER, which eliminated everything except the solution.
Other than the first letters of our respective starting words, exactly the same as @EllisDee.

Today was pretty lucky. OFTEN was the only word I saw after SMELT and I was just letter-testing. I was quite surprised when it turned out to be the answer – and WordleBot advised there were 20 other possibilities.
