I saw QUASI very quickly, but refused to believe it could be the solution, and didn’t figure it would help me much if it wasn’t. So I kept looking… and looking… for something else. Finally I saw it, but still hesitated before doubling up on two letters I’d already placed. The word I didn’t see was ABASE. The first A would have gotten me there, and I wouldn’t have been mad about a four. Quite happy for a three today! ---

In the fourth slot, ABASE had already been used, and I could only find AMASS and UKASE. I thought the latter was the sort of word a NYT editor would know and maybe even use once in a rare while, but us mere mortals almost never see, so it was an easy choice. ---

Finally, with midnight approaching I had to just try. Before the letters had even finished turning over I saw awash and was mad at myself for not seeing it 5 seconds earlier. Then even that wasn’t the answer. Just terrible all around. The double double gets me good. ---
