Pretty much what everyone else here is saying. When I was a kid, racial or anti-gay slurs might have been considered impolite, but were not the subject of censorship, even on network television.
And even in movies, they are not done except if they are shown in a negative way. For example, I’m thinking of Airplane where the little girl likes her coffee black like her men, and June Cleaver speaking jive with the two black passengers. That wouldn’t even be included in an R-rated movie today as humor directed at the audience.
So, it’s not that you CAN’T, but it seems to be a self-censorship where you don’t. Except on Comedy Central Roasts where everything goes.
I don’t recall Archie Bunker ever using the word “nigger”. I do recall “jigaboo” on one episode, but it was spoken by the black man repeating what he heard on the telephone. Also, a Hispanic delivery boy referred to Archie calling him “the spic kid” but you never heard Archie say it.
I remember being shocked at George Jefferson using the word “nigger”, but I think that was on The Jeffersons, not All In The Family.
