My wife has trouble with “diatomaceous”. She always flips the t and the m, “diamataceous”. I tell her “It’s _diatom_aceous because it contains _diatoms_” but that doesn’t help. ---

Our elementary school teachers were high priestesses of the Funk & Wagnalls. We looked up every new word we came across. In the fifth grade we looked up how to pronounce the name of a large starchy banana (plantain) because it was mentioned in a story we were reading. I guess no one uses dictionaries anymore. ---

A television was on in another room in the sports report at the end of the news. It didn’t seem reasonable that the Yukon territory in far northwestern Canada would have the population to support a basketball team serious enough to make national news. Maybe there is not much else to do on a cold winter’s night up there. ---

In Maryland there’s a Canine Road that’s pronounced “cah-NEEN” (“rode”). ---
