Watchmen, by Alan Moore. There are many great graphic novels, but Watchmen is simply the first one that leaps to mind. It’s a must-read for anyone, especially those who are not yet convinced that comics are in fact an art form.
In the discipline of literature, I’ll second ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ by Marquez, and add ‘The Brothers Karamazov’ by Dostoevsky. They’re amazing works of art.
For music, I’ll second, third, and fourth the Chaconne from the Violin Partita No. 2 in D Minor. That’s a masterpiece to the ears. I’d like to add in the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C-Sharp Minor by Franz Liszt and the Polonaise in A-Flat (Op. 53) by Frederic Chopin. They’re everything one would ever like to hear in a piece of music.
The 1971 albums Love It To Death and Killer by the Alice Cooper group… Solace (1991) by Sarah McLachlan… Garbage’s self-titled first album (1995)… numerous Roy Orbison songs… (Quite an eclectic taste in music, eh?)

I can’t speak about Tool, as thy’ve never been given the chance to rock my world, but I personally think there’s nothing “loose” about applying the word genius to Marvin Gaye.
If not sticking to the accepted “cannon” in each genre, and only bestowing the term on people who are long dead and gone is being loose, then call me loose! er… or something like that.
But seriously, we all know the accepted list of geniuses for most disciplines, which have emerged over time, crafted and argued over by people probably far more conversant with all the available material than most of us. The point of this thread is to talk about what these things do for YOU personally- as ever, it’s all subjective.
If George Best gets you in “that” way Lochdale, then I for one am certainly not going to argue with you. I’m more of a cricket fan myself, so it’s easier for me to see the beauty in a wristy shot from Sachin Tendulkar than in the footwork of a footballer, but whatever floats your boat.
The Gateway Arch in St. Louis. This is another one of those things that you have to actually see, not just rely on photos. Simple, elegant and big.
Imissed out a “not” there, can you spot where?
