I have immense respect for Jed Dickerson’s quest to catch (or re-catch) the late lunker affectionately called Dottie. Two years ago this spring, Jed landed Dottie, a 25 lb. 1 oz. largemouth that would have smashed George Perry’s 22 lb. 4 oz. record out of Montgomery Lake in Georgia. > > The problem is, he shanked her - reportedly near the dorsal fin, so the IGFA ruled against it. In an interesting twist, Jed released the monster, and was stalking her for nearly two years until a Ranger regrettably informed him that Dottie was found dead, floating in Lake Dixon at 19 +/- lbs. ---

Correct - In order for a fish to meet the requirement of the IGFA, it must be caught ‘legally’ (in accordance with local Fish and Game Regulations) - in this case, the fish was hooked outside the mouth, which is against the rules in CA (or atleast for that body of water). ---
