I didn’t want to look, but I just had to look and by the time the page loaded I knew the dog was okay. So maybe because the image was rather small and I have absolutely no experience with the result of a fight with a porcupine, but for just a split second it was amusing in it’s cartoonishness. More fascination really, it just can’t be real; that many quills had to be glued on, is what I was thinking. Then I got a good look and it wasn’t funny _at all_. How did that poor baby not lose her sight? Note to self-- real porcupines are to be avoided at all costs. Life is not a Looney Tunes production. Ouch ouch ouch ---

That, my friends, is why porcupines evolved quills…and why intelligent predators _leave them the fuck alone_. I neither think it’s funny nor disturbing, disgusting, or pitiful. That is a severely dumbassed dog who probably would have died in horrific, protracted pain in the wild…thus sparing us all any (further?) dumbassed doggie offspring. ---

Tuckerfan, I’m surprised at you for finding that funny. That really seems out of character for you. Okay 'nuff said. I think other people have given you enough grief. As far as that hunter kicking the boar, well as far as I know very few animals will attack humans even when they are being attacked\* by\* humans. Now if that hunter had done that to a mountain lion, a polar bear, or a tiger I’d say “Jesus Christ that is one brave hombre there!!!” I believe the Polar Bear and the tiger actually go out of their way to hunt humans. No, I am not some Yankee liberal that has an anti-hunting attitude. However, let’s look at that from the boar’s perspective. Some human was invading _his_ domain and he was looking to see what was going on, maybe even a little bit steamed that another hunter was using his turf. Perhaps if the hunter can use the boar’s hunting ground, maybe the boar can “return the favor” by taking a shit in that guy’s living room. 😃 ---

That was also a very small boar. They can and frequently do run up to 400-500 pounds. ---

I think the humor in the situation derives from the idea of anything being dumb enough to not only attack a porcupine, but to persist in attacking one. That said, I do feel sorry for the poor dumb dog. Hopefully, the dog won’t make that mistake again. ---

That poor dog, I am so glad that she is going to be alright. She is not, in all probability, a dumb dog. She is a **terrier** and she obviously has a very high prey drive. She was doing what bull terriers have been bred to do, and you can’t fault her for that. When terriers were being bred originally, (as well as all other breeds) there was a _purpose_ behind the selection of traits sought and bred for. Terriers kill vermin. Think of how large, mean, and nasty rats are. Now breed me a dog which will attack and hang on for the kill, no matter what kind of defensive biting and scratching the rat is doing. Now breed me a bigger dog for larger vermin. Porcupines are vegetarians. They are able to destroy crops and devestate orchards. Inca was doing her job. What a **good girl!** Fortunately, we live in a time when she is not subjected to this on a regular basis, we have well trained veterinarians and good medications, and her owner, judging from the post I read, is a concerned dog owner who is nursing Inca back to health from this very unfortunate encounter. Hopefully Inca has learned to leave porcupines alone. jmo ---

Bull Terriers have very small squinty eyes. I suspect that’s the main reason her vision was spared. I cringe to think what would happen to my big-eyed Cocker Spaniel. But then he’s more of the “pee and run” type, than the “attack and kill” type. ---

Exactly. I used to have a lab who’d chew up any aluminum drink can he could find if I didn’t get away from him. He’d chew the things until he cut his tongue and he’d bleed like a stuck pig. Didn’t bother him a bit that he’d cut himself, he’d always have this self-satisfied grin on his face afterwards. Now, as anyone who’s owned one can tell you, labs **aren’t** stupid, in fact, if they had opposable thumbs, they’d be hell on four legs, so my dog wasn’t an idiot, he **enjoyed** it for some reason. I wouldn’t be surprised if Inca was greatly pleased with herself. Of course, if it later turns out that her owner had somehow provoked her into attacking the porcupine, then he ought to be flayed alive. ---

An animal repeatedly attacking a porcupine like that is the equivalent of a human deciding to punish their broken lawnmower by kicking it while wearing sandals. It’s just funny, unless it’s you or someone you care about. If we’re not allowed to laugh at people and/or animals doing dumb things, how are we supposed to get our laughs in this moron-filled world? Although I am glad no-one got a picture of the incident where one of my gerbils decided to bite me on the nose and hang on like a little lively mustache while I ran around screaming for my momma. It would be just too humiliating if anyone knew about that. ---

I remember reading once that wild boars were one of the most feared animals in the medieval European forest. A boar spear has a crosspiece some distance back from the tip, to keep the boar you’ve just stuck from **coming right up the spear and getting you**. ---
