Erma Bombeck wrote a great book called “Motherhood: The Second Oldest Profession.” She said that people would come up to her at book signings and ask what was the first one.

What would the first prostitutes have been payed with?

Protection, Food, Clothing, Shelter, whetever else she needed.

The “guy” wouldn`t need to have a profession himself necessarily. Just a bit extra of whetever was needed for survival.
