# Worldwide death rate

How many people die every day around the world?

We keep seeing on the news that such-and-such a number of people died in such-and-such a disaster. How big does the disaster have to be before it makes a real difference in how many people would have died that day anyway?

I calculated about 143,000 yearly using data from [here](http://encarta.msn.com/media_461530984_761561241_-1_1/World_Birth_and_Death_Rates.html) , so it seems that somewhere in the 140,000 to 150,000 ballpark would be close.

And the worldwide birth rate is 357,000 births per day.

So a net gain of 204,000 additional people on earth every day.

Have a look on [this site](http://www.poodwaddle.com/clocks.htm) (there’s some great stuff here)… go down to the section “World Clock”. Right now it’s counting about 156,500 deaths per day.
