Time to finally find out. Etymonline tells me “nog” means “a type of strong ale” under its etymology of “egg nog” and then under nog says "Attested by 1690s as “old, strong type of beer brewed in Norfolk.” [Dictionary.com](http://Dictionary.com) tells me “nog” is “any beverage made with beaten eggs,” so now I’m wondering … are there any other “nogs” besides the usual eggnog? ---

I would like egg nog to be split into two separate categories though. Mass market “[insert holiday name here] egg nog” and made-from-scratch egg nog. Now, the first category, I’ll have, oh, say about once a year, a craving for, drink a glass, and then remember how cloyingly sweet, full of HFCS, and over-thickened it is. I’m aware enough of this to not _BUY_ said store nog, but someone will be serving it and it’ll take care of the “yeah, I remember how bad this is”. Homemade egg nog is none of those things, and depending on personal preferences, the booze of choice and the labor involved is a creamy but not excessively thick beverage of the gods (as long as you understand that those are gods of drunkenness, excess calories and eventual heartburn). But I still (for the reasons just listed) want it as a sometimes food. But I don’t want to _fight_ anyone over this as a food preference, because that’s subjective. I mean, I know people who can’t stand quality homemade nog but love the store stuff because that’s what they’ve always had. I just don’t take their advice on food! ---

Has anyone had Advocaat, a Dutch drink made from eggs, sugar and brandy? The one I tried was too sweet but with less sugar it could be a good nogternative. ---

In the UK, people often buy a bottle of Advocaat for Christmas, so all the grannies can have an alcoholic drink (usually mixed with lemonade). You can’t easily get eggnog over here, and if it doesn’t have alcohol in it, the idea seems a bit pointless. ---

The fizzy orange drink? What’s wrong with that?!? Nani I don’t think I know, but Orangina was one of my favorite drinks as a kid. With most drinks I could understand what people don’t like about them, but that one is totally innocuous. ---

I found Orangina a couple years ago, at a Hy-Vee in the more upscale 'burb in town. I should have bought them out, but I got 2 of them hoping I would see it again. It said “Product of Slovenia” which explained why it’s hard to find. ---

It’s not cloyingly sweet like most orange soft drinks are. For sheer vileness, I would think that GoLytely would top the charts, though it’s not intended as a beverage for you to enjoy. Everything else listed her is something that was developed to the point where SOMEONE thought it tasted acceptable. ---

In honor of Illinois’ two-brood cicada invasion, one bar has offered cicada-infused Malort shots. From the Wall St. Journal: "The shot included an intact but quite dead cicada. Gail, who doesn’t even like Malört, drew the line at swallowing the bug. Misael rose to the challenge. “I felt it all the way down,” he said. “Why not take something that people already hate and make it even worse,” said Brady Potts, a manager at the brewpub, explaining the rationale for the pairing. In the first four or five days after the shots hit the menu, the pub went through 22 bottles of Malört, up from about a bottle every two weeks." ---
