Several years ago, there was a diaper commercial that changed “Whoomp! There It Is” to “Poop! There it is.” Even people who didn’t remember the song hated the commercial. I’m mentioning this because there’s now a GEICO commercial where a family is dishing up ice cream and singing “Scoops! There it is!” and, among other things, a teenage girl who has just arrived home from school rolls her eyes and walks away. ---

A commercial for Bounce dryer sheets made use of “Your Love” by The Outfield, and it was terrible. It’s not like I’m expecting poetry when a commercial changes the lyrics of an old favorite to promote a product, but this effort seemed especially undercooked. ---

What’s always puzzled me - although knowing advertising & corporate morons I guess it shouldn’t - is that rarely does the chosen song have anything what-so-ever to do with the product at hand. But advertising is rarely aimed at thoughtful, half way intelligent types. More often it’s aimed at young, primarily girls/women who will actually sing along to commercials. Sorry for the stereotyping but in this case it’s pretty much true - why so many ads are for female type products. ---

Local car commercials that take the Ghostbusters theme so as to belt out Who You Gonna Call? and their name. Especially when the name just throws all to crap the meter of the song and the idea of gleefully shouting it. _When you need a car, truck or van… who you gonna call? The LG laundry machines with Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Got Your Money” are pretty terrible. I do like the GEICO Whoomp There It Is with the chocolata chocolata chocolata chocolata and the parents super into it though. ---
