> The juxtaposition of a Cold War comedy with a Cold War rah-rah war movie was pretty jarring.

In 1984, I saw _Cloak & Dagger_ followed by _Red Dawn_ at a drive-in: a kiddie version of a kid fighting the Cold War followed by an adult version of kids fighting the Cold War.

Most of the double features I saw were appropriate for each other. But when my parents took me to see _Meatballs_ followed by _Heaven can Wait_, I lost interest in the latter and turned around and watched _Alien_ without sound. That movie is quite scary, even without sound.

I remember seeing _Where’s Poppa?,_ a hilarious comedy with George Segal and Ruth Gordon, followed by _Joe,_ a drama about a racist played by Peter Boyle, which ended with a slaughter of “hippies” by Joe and another man. I remember a woman commenting at the end “I wish the first movie had been last.”
