Rat Fink a Boo-Boo Also, William Friedkin re-made “The Wages of Fear” and titled it “Sorcerer.” This was his first movie after “The Exorcist”, causing many people to think it was a sequel or related in some way. It was a good movie, but the title made no sense at all. ---

That is actually my nomination. They don’t really get worse than printer’s errors the auteur decides to go with. But since my #1 is taken, I’ll add a couple from my top 10 list. Actually, my #2 is pretty bad, but only because it’s badly translated. The German title is _Die Jungfrauenmaschine_. It was pretty much translated verbatim-- a thing you just cannot do with German, and called in the US _The Virgin Machine._ Any American, seeing an ad for it thinks it’s going to be some kind of softcore sci-fi about a machine that makes virgins. If you look closer, you might think it’s making some kind of commentary about society’s pressure on women to be virginal. But I guess no one would notice it if it had been titled in spirit, _My First Movie._ The filmmaker is referring to the camera as a “virgin machine,” because this is the first film she’s made with it. And, I think this list would be incomplete without _Plan 9 from Outer Space._ ---

_Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone._ I actually saw it without having read any of the books, even though the title didn’t speak to me. It had nice visuals. But once they revealed what the Sorcerer’s Stone was, I reacted “ahh, it’s the Philosopher’s Stone. Why didn’t they just call it that in the first place?” So I correctly guessed that the series wasn’t made with me in mind, so never got into it after that. It would have been a much better title, for me at least, had they stuck with the original book title. There are those who say that the title _still_ meshes with Rowling’s oeuvre, in that elsewhere, she calls things _almost_ but not quite what they would logically be classically. But, while true, for some reason _her_ use of dog latin just rubs me the wrong way and I can’t explain why, so being true to the spirit of Rowling doesn’t make it any better. ---
