Inspired after learning that my hometown baseball field has been renamed [Dozer Park](http://www.sj-r.com/breaking/x1325898887/Peorias-baseball-stadium-renamed-Dozer-Park-by-Caterpillar), which has been met with reactions ranging from “Well that’s dumb” to “Huh, I guess that’s okay.”

What are some particularly bad names out there? I’m not looking for “Some company renamed our field!” unless it’s a really bad company name or it doesn’t work with the sport at all.

Not the worst, but I have to think University of Phoenix Stadium fits into this category. A mostly online university that has no athletic program at all.

I don’t find either Mall of America Field or Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome to be particularly objectionable, but I cringe when the Vikings try to awkwardly cram them together as “Mall of America Field at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.” That name has a remaining lifetime of less than a year though.

Well, it used to be the Oakland Coliseum, so it’s really just a shortening of the name, right? **O** akland\*\*.Co\*\*liseum…

No, it really isn’t. It’s just absolutely, completely, horribly bad.

[Modern Woodmen Park](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=691944)in Davenport, Iowa isn’t the worst name for a stadium but the Jumer’s Casino Rock Island Hot Tub Deck has to win some sort of award for worst-named section of a stadium.

[O.co](http://O.co) is sponsored by [overstock.com](http://overstock.com), who shortened their name. The similarity is probably not coincidental, however. It’s weird, but I don’t think the worst. But then I mostly would follow the A’s.

I think we have to look abroad for this. In [Nippon Professional Baseball](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nippon_Professional_Baseball#Teams), we have “MAZDA Zoom-Zoom Stadium Hiroshima,” and “Kleenex Stadium Miyagi.” And of course the team names are mostly in the formula [city + corporate sponsor + animal]. The best (worst) of the team names is the “Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters.”

Edit: or I guess the Kleenex one is the old name.

“Peoria’s baseball stadium renamed ‘Dozer Park’ by Caterpillar”. I don’t like Dozer park. Sounds sleepy or in need of demolition. But more importantly, how could they have passed up the chance to call it “Caterpillar Field”!

Given Philly sports fans’ reputation, that seems appropriate, somehow. These are the folks who booed Santa Claus, after all.

Never send a skinny, scrawny, scraggly Santa in during a 2-12 season.

Doyt? That’s a new one for me. Sounds like the sound a racquetball would make hitting another person in the head.

I miss the stadium names that were either connected to a team or a region. In my opinion, any city that builds the stadium with taxpayer money should get the revenue for naming rights, not the team and/or owner. The biggest reason I hate these new names is that now I have no idea where a team is playing, because all of the names could, for the most part, be used in any city for any stadium. This is one reason I like the Yankees. As much as there is to hate this team, they still play in Yankee Stadium, not “Chef Boyardee” Stadium. The Yankees are rich enough that they don’t have to sell things like the naming rights, and I love that.

In the big 4 sports, what’s left?

1. Yankee Stadium
2. Wrigley Field
3. Fenway Park
4. Arrowhead and Kaufmann (formerly Royals) Stadium. Not the original name, but named after the founding owner, not some company.
5. Rodgers Center (formerly SkyDome) in Toronto. Also named for the original owner of the team.
6. Madison Square Garden.
7. Dodgers Stadium
8. The new Comisky Park?
9. Jacob’s Field (Cleveland),
10. Oriole Park at Camden Yards
I’m sure there are a few more out there, but that’s the best I can do off the top of my head.

“New Comiskey” is more like a nickname. The White Sox officially play at U.S. Cellular Field, so that goes off your list. How about Soldier Field? Not named after an owner, city or original tenant, but a solid original name honoring veterans.

Soldier field definitely qualifies. Comisky park is off. I didn’t know it was named Cellular field.

What about Lambeau? They couldn’t change that to the Cheese Factory…fans would revolt.
